My mum expect's a gift from my daughter (her grand-daughter) for Mother's Day and she expected us to give a gift to her Mum.
I disagree. I think gifts should only be given to your mum only, not any high up then that. She also mentioned this year the she had not gotten ME a present for mothers day. I was like um you don't need to since I am not your mother...
What do people think about this? Is it present giving gone out of control or something that everyone does?

I agree with you, I think people give presents for all sorts of things they don't need to. It isn't grandmother's day, it is mother's day. My boys don't give their grandmothers presents, I never gave my grandmothers presents. Well, actually...I probably did in the days where you made lots of crappy stuff at primary school to take home :lol:. I think your daughter should wish her Grandma a Happy Mother's Day because she is A mother, but a gift is not necessary.
I agree too! It's mother's day. This year my ILs bought me a present because I'm the mother of their grandchild, I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but I don't think they needed to do that. I think MIL would like things from me too but I never have got into that before :dunno: Glad I'm not the only one. It just doesn't feel right to me. DP is in Adelaide visiting his rellies at the moment and he commented it would be good because he'd be there to have Mother's day with his Granny. I just think, yeah but she's not your mum. I feel like I'm heartless or something and I'm the odd one out with all this amongst the ILs.
I agree that its MOTHERS day, not grand mothers day. I could go on but i have a screaming baby to deal with :)
Well i don't actually get my mum and mil a gift from my boys- but i'll always get them involved in the gift somehow- like help decorate to card, family portraits in frames, and eventually as they get older- possibly next year- i'll get them to help make something (eg picture, cake etc). I know my mum (and hopefully mil) loves presents that involve the boys somehow- because they adore my boys so much (they are my mum's only grand children and mil's only grandson's and local).
So i kinda agree- grandparents shouldn't really get specific presents from the grandchild for mothers/fathers day (unless in some circumstances when the grandparents play a major role in the up bringing of the child of course).
My kids always give my mum presents on Mother's day. If my grandmother celebrated mother's day I would give her presents too. I don't see the problem.
I do usually buy my mum something from my DD, but more to thank her for what she does for us. Every second Friday she looks after my DD whilst DH & I work and whilst she loves it my mum is 62 yo and not a 'young' 62 yo. This year my DD made her a card at playgroup & we gave her a joint present.
I used to give my Oma (grandmother) a present for mothers day. but in our case we were incredibly close and for quite a few years her and my Opa raised me (so i also give him a present on fathers day for example).
This is my first Mothers Day without my Oma and man, how I wish she were here so that I could shower her with love and gifts...
IMHO gifts should only be given with love and caring, not out of a sense of duty ITMS, so yeah i think it is kind of weird if it's expected or demanded that you have to give presents to your grandmother.
I wouldn't expect it, like your mother does, but to me mothers day is about mothers everywhere, not just your own mum, kwim? So in celebrating mothers day, I celebrate taht my grandmother has given me motherly advice and has treated me like her own child, so I celebrate her too, and usually at least get her a card. I also gave my mum and MIL a card and drawings from my children to celebrate too. Though not because it's an expected gesture, but because I celebrate them as mothers!
My kids make my mum something because she also expects a present. We don't buy a gift though. This year they made chocolate truffles. I am not a fan of mother's day and the whole thing annoys me no end ...
My gift to my mum was actually from my kids (it was a sign that said "What happens at Grandma's stays at Grandma's". Mum gave me a present for mothers day "from my kids" (so they handed it to me but it was bought by her. I bought a present for my MIL from my DH and the ids, the card was for "Nanna". Don't see the problem with grandmothers getting/giving gifts.
