How can we discourage our neighbour's dog?

This is part vent, part call for help and definite WHAT CAN WE DOOOOO?????

We live on a property, have dog, she's fixed, has no interest in mendogfolk. Well, not in 'that' way, but she's always been pretty popular with the local dogs. They don't sniff around her or anything, but genuinely seem to like hanging out with her.

Anyway, her current beau is now 3 and has been visiting for his whole life. He lives 2kms down the road and we're quite close with his owners. They are pseudo grandparents to DS and we love them dearly. BUT I'm so frickin sick of their dog coming over!!!!!! At first it was because they'd stay up playing on the verandah all night, but now it's because he marks EVERYTHING, shoes, washing (how does it get up that high???) our bbq, our dog's bed... EVERYTHING. Plus, he has fleas, so everytime he comes over, he sleeps on our dog's bed with her and so she gets fleas and we can't let her inside.

Tonight he's here, I can smell his pee everywhere and there's someone shooting, or letting off fireworks across the river, so my dog wants to come inside, but I don't want her too because she's already scratching.

How can we discourage him from being here? We don't feed him, we tell him to go home, wave him off, do everything but beat him with a stick (no, I'm not prepared to do that....yet). But he keeps coming back whenever his owners forget to tie him up.

Anyone got any tips??? SOmething that's not going to discourage our own dog from 'her' area.

Uhm. Tell your neighbour to deflea the poor thing and fix their fences :)
It's not your responsibility to keep him out of your yard. It's theirs.

Have you got a flea collar on your dog? The neighbour's cats have fleas and our dog kept copping them until we put a flea collar on him. If you are really close to the owners I'd suggest having a chat to them and informing them of the problems he's causing. Maybe another option would be to put a product called Keep off (I think it's called that, Yates make it) around the perimeter of your property. The place where he enters/exits the most in a large area so it deters him from crossing it but in a way that it won't irritate your dog.

As a dog owner of a dog with his jewels I knowing gross that smell can be. Sounds like your place might be more of a home to him than his own. Dogs are pack animals so they like company.

Does he come over willy nilly or is there a pattern as to when he will show up? If there is,maybe you can take a drive with your girl, then there wont be a reason for him to stay?

I would talk to his owners, he wonders off probably looking to procreate.... Just tell them what you told us. Boy dog wee stinks and you shouldn't be the one smelling it at your place! Hopefully they'll understand.

We live on properties, so the fences thing is out- he's usually tied up, but they 'forget' to sometimes (personally I think this is so we'll come and visit them the next day, or they have an excuse to visit us- but I wish they'd just call!!!). They're not doing it to be malicious, I know that, but I don't know how to tell them without offending them.

Crazylady, a flea collar might be a good idea- do they work? At the moment, it seems like we're frontlining her every week- can't be good for her! No idea where he's entering, there's a pretty large space of land for him to make his way here.

Can't even lock him out because he sits there and whinges, and our dog barks all night.

There is your excuse then, call and say Ds is sick and the barking dogs are keeping him awake. Maybe they will take the hint. It's a tricky one.

Firstly get some comfortis, either from your local vet or from here, it's cheaper on the website, but that will rid you of your flea problem within 4 hours :) and secondly I think you may have to chat to the owners, just keep it friendly and nothing serious but explain that it's a bit of a PITA regarding fleas and urine stentches and they are keeping ppl in your household awake which doesn't help when ds is unwell.

Thanks Raffy, I'd never heard of it before! Just ordered some, looks great. They flea their dogs as well, I don't know where they keep coming from, maybe from a neighbouring property the dog has to walk through- maybe the fleas just hitchhike ;)

Hubby is out cleaning and spraying the verandah now, see if that works, maybe it's just going to be part of our cleaning routine more often.

We do talk to the neighbours about it, and they try, but I think they get lonely sometimes and don't want to 'ask' for us to come over. They're from a different world out here :) A beautiful one, but one that takes a little getting used to. Thanks for your suggestions x

Call the dog catcher! After he gets picked up a few times and they have to pay the fee to get him back, I'm sure they will remember to tie him up.

I think fleas live in sand too... Don't quote me though.
