Too young for coming of age book?

So I need some advice. Last weekend when I was at a girlfriends I was talking to her 11 year old daughter and se was talking about learning about becoming a women at school. I told her there was a great book about called Are you there God it's me Magaret. She said she would love to read it. I've ordered it for her birthday but I am now having second thoughts. I realized she is only in grade five and her parents might not appreciate the gift! It's not about sex or anything just about getting your period and all that embarrassing stuff she said she feels funny talking to her mum about. So what should I do? Give her the book? Ask her mum if she minds? (don't want her to think I am trying to do her job) Or wait and give it to her for Christmas?

What a lovely thought but I think you should tell her mum about the conversation and ask her whether she would mind you giving her the book.

Ask her mum first hun. I would rather be asked if it was my DD.

Think I will damned if I do and damned if I don't. Mother can get a little touchy and may get a little freaked thinking I am "taking" over. Wish I had never even brought it up. But it is a great book for young girls.

I had it when I was in grade five. I read it heaps of times. It is good because it talks about the feelings that go along with puberty and getting your period, etc.

Maybe say to Mum you bought the book because you liked it when you were younger, but just wanted to run it by her first because of some of the content. You dont need to say you bought it BECAUSE of some of the content IYKWIM.

If you think the mum won't like it then maybe don't ask her if it's ok and just cancel the order. But if you really want to give her the book ask the mum, you might be surprised hopefully she will be happy with you giving it to her. Maybe the girl could get it herself from the library?

You could always *cough* bend the truth a little. Tell them mum one of your friends brought it and they sent 2 copies by mistake and you thought of her when your friend asked if she knew anyone that wanted it. You might not be able to give it as a gift as such, but it still gets into their house IYKWIM for the girl to read.

Definitely not too young for it, more than a few girls start getting their period at around that age. I recently picked up a book on puberty for my DD who is 9 and starting to show a few of the signs.

But I'd still definitely run it past mum first - keep it pretty casual maybe saying you were talking about books and told her about this one and she seemed really interested so you ordered a copy but wanted to run it past mum first, so it's less confronting than saying "x was talking about puberty the other day and seemed to need more info"
