Small and breech :(

Had an Ob appointment yesterday, and left feeling a bit upset.
Am 32+2 weeks, but my bump is pretty small. I'm quite tall so had been putting it down to that, but I did think it would have been growing more quickly. Ob ordered an ultrasound just to check that bub is growing ok (I didn't even bring it up, it was small enough to make her worried). I'm glad I get another scan but so paranoid it's going to show something wrong. Anyone had a similar experience?

Secondly, bub is breech. Head was down at 28 weeks but I thought kicks had gotten lower and I was right. She said it might flip yet but if it doesn't we'll be talking about CS. I did so much reading last night and decided that although vaginal breech birth does look like a good idea, I would only want to try it if my Ob and midwives were skilled in this sort of delivery. I will talk to her about it, but if she is one of those who always just does CS for them then I am not sure I want to risk it. And I don't think I want to change Ob now. Same with external version, I'd only want to try it if Ob was very pro, and I don't think she is.

I'm really hoping that bub just keeps growing and gets big enough to decide that head down is far more comfy. My next appointment is 35 weeks so you've got till then Squidge! Have read all the spinning babies stuff, and will possibly try the moxa thing. Any other ideas?

accupuncture can work too. plenty of babies change between 32 weeks & birth.

DD was a small baby because I had high BP throughout my pregnancy. Also because she was small she had extra space to flip around until the end. There is still time for bubs to flip. At the 32 week U/S DD wasn't as small as the Ob thought and when I was induced at 36w DD was 2.165kg (4.7pound). Yes, still small but Ob was expecting waaaaaaaaaaay smaller. When I was being induced (BP went super high) they had to check 3 times that her head was down prior to breaking water. I know several women that were measuring small and baby turned out to be perfectly sized.

It might just be that bub is tucking itself in and hiding on ya. Is there any way you can talk to your Ob as soon as the U/s reults come in? It might ease your mind a bit and give you more to think about prep wise.

Start doing moxa and spinning babies exercises NOW! When i did moxabastion DS2 was soo active. All this activity, i think, gave him the best chance to spin around. The exercises are funny, but if it gives you a head down bub at the end - then that's the best result! Bub might turn spontaneously - but you may as well help out a bit.

I hope you get a head down bub before too long. Finding a hospital that is happy (and more importantly insured) to do vaginal breech, is not as easy as it should be.

Get started now - it'll be worth it in the end.

I have a friend who is very tall and they told her that her all her babies would be small. The last one they told her was measuring 3 weeks behind dates. He was born at 39 weeks weighing 5kg and was 57cm long. Fundal height is only a guide, tall women often carry smaller than shorter women. Try not to stress. If all your other scans and measurements have been fine, this one most likely will as well. Also remember that ultrasounds are not terribly effective in calculating weight though most Obs swear by them.

As far as breech - DD2 was a footling breech and I read all the research too. I ended up with a CS and as much as people are always saying you can naturally birth a breech baby, you have to be comfortable with it. You have to know the risks and weigh it up for yourself. Just because other people think that it is possible (and constantly remind me that I did not need a CS), it is not their baby they are risking. It is yours so you have to be comfortable with your own decision. I felt the same way that you do - if there were people who were at all qualified in dealing with breech babies, I would have thought about risking it, but no-one where I birthed seemed to know anything except to be scared of them. I really had very few options and once I went into labour, the decision was made for me because it was hospital policy not to have footling breeches naturally (risk of cord prolapse). If the baby was a Frank breech or complete breech, they would have tried turning her or let me have a go birthing naturally but due to being feet first instead of bum first it creates further risk.

I read all the research too and at the end decided that yes, some women have safely birthed footling breech babies, but some have not. Contrary to popular belief it is not always that they weren't being cared for properly by people who know what they were doing. It just wasn't a risk I was happy to take. I was not thrilled about having a c/section at all either and I still have lots of disappointment about it but I am very thankful for my healthy baby girl.

Don't know if my ramblings helped at all but do what you are comfortable doing and no matter what anyone else says ... do what you think is right.

Firstly i am 5'11" and was quite worried with DD1 that i had such a small bump compared to other women but my OB explained i had {---------------------} this much room when others only had {------} this much :rofl: so please don't stress TOO much about this until you have the scan and know exactly whats going on.
Both my girls were only 6lb11oz so not tiny tiny but smaller than the average and they are perfectly healthy.

In regards to breech have you checked out the info on spinning babies?
Lots of bubs can turn before they are due, so try not to worry yourself too much, arm yourself with as much information on breech birth and spinning techniques as you can and deal with what your given based on your knowledge and comfort.
Will your OB support a vaginal breech birth? It can be done but only if your comfortable with it. (see my DD1's birth story).

All i can suggest is arm yourself with information, discuss things with your OB and go with what your comfortable with, if bub does not turn it's not the end of the world, you make a decision based on what you feel is right for you and your baby at the time.. good luck with it all, hoping bub turns and is a nice healthy size for you.

I'm not saying because vaginal CAN be done that it should but if it's something you want to consider it's good to know it CAN be done, but you need to be aware of the risks for both C/S and Vaginal.
Had i of known DD1 was footling breech there is every chance i would have had a C/S based on the risks, it's worth knowing details on both as some OB's like to use scare tactics but ultimately it's up to you and what your comfortable with.

My sister had a bubs who was breach right up until around 37 weeks then he turned, he was not small, was 9 pound something at birth and my sister is not as tall as you. So I personally think def research into all of the above but don't stress too much yet, you have time and room up your sleeve hun ;-)

(By the way she def felt him turn around the right way one night, wasn't comfortable but better then needing a CS)

thanks everyone. Had the scan this week. Most importantly, bub is measuring perfectly :) that was my biggest worry, but all looks good.
Position wise, head is further round towards being down, but position is now oblique, with head in my hip and shoulder in my pelvis. Hopefully this means things are on the way to being the right spot, but have read that babies can get suite stuck in the transverse/oblique position. I've booked in with a chiropractor for monday, chances are bub will turn, but doing everything I can to increase those chances!

That's the best attitude to have. And some of the techniques etc are quite relaxing so you can get a bit of a break too!

my last ultrasound - my baby is on transverse position. I will have my 4d ultrasound soon. I hope she already turned. :)
