50's hair

I'm looking for a few tips of a hairdresser or someone who is handy with styling tresses. I have shoulder length, very fine hair, and am looking to get some 50's style waves in it (think Dita Von Teese but ginger :lol: ). I know the best way to do this is with rollers overnight or all day until I am ready to go out, but that is as far as I know. So I have a few questions.

1) Do I need all the same size rollers, or some large and some small?

2) If I need some smaller ones where on my head do I place these in relation to the large ones?

3) How many rollers do I need?

4) What products do I need to ensure the curls stay?

I use to use a variety of styling products, from extra strong hold mouse to a soft, strong hold hair spray. I'd touch up curls with a curling iron but I use to set my hair in pin curls as opposed to rollers. I always did my pin curls tight and brushed out and shaped curls to how I wanted them.

I'd go for a larger roller (but not huge) around the top of the hair near the face if you're wanting waves.

I'd also recommend just having a play and working out whats best for your own hair. Mine has a natural curl/wave to it and seems to set well and easily, my gf has dead straight hair which drops curls after an hour.

Thanks Nae, my hair is very straight and tends to drop a curl quite quickly but if I rag it overnight and all day, plus use lots of hairspray, it will hold a tightish curl until the early hours. I might get a few different types of rollers and try to see what the effect is.

oh wanted to add, there are some really good tutorial type blogs for 50's hair styles, might need to search for Rockabilly, 50's hair styles, 40's hair styles etc.

I found a few good ones (now deleted of fmy computer sadly) for creating great bangs, pompadoors (sp?), page boy hair styles etc.

Is you are looking for waves rather than curls- I'd invest in a 3 barreled curler- think that's what they're called.

ETA- just looked at the pic- do you have a large curling wand?

There are instruction videos on youtube and other places like that. Are you after finger waves of curls like in my wedding photos (though that was more 40s)?

If you google super kawaii mama you'll find a blog with heaps and heaps and heaps of 40's/50's hair, make-up, styling tips and whatnot.

Meant to add that I'm pretty sure she did a thing on the best hair dressers for that type of style in Melbourne too.

thanks TMS I will google her. It;s for a wedding in a couple of months so I have heaps of time to get it right but I was going to do a trial run this Saturday :)
