Hi lovelies!
I am 6 weeks two days with my first child and have the first signs of a cold - fatigue and a tingly throat. I am worried getting sick may harm the baby. Any suggestions for safely (in terms of bub) keeping the cold at bay?
Thanks :)

Up our vitamin C, zinc and garlic intake. Plenty of fluids and rest too.
Getting a cold in itself is not dangerous.
Thanks LimeSlice... Obviously this is my first pregnancy otherwise I wouldn't be fretting. I'm taking Blackmores pregnancy supplements and just took a couple of vitamin C tablets too. Plus made a fresh Ginger, lemon and honey tea.
Hate to say but yes illness can sometimes effect the development of the baby. I imagine it would only be a very small risk with simple illness such as a cold. But when I found out I was pregnant with #4, I had been to the dr just days before as I had a horrible throat infection. Temp of 41degree & a throat that looked like it had been through a mincer. Anyway antibiotics & panadol soon had me fixed. But then when # 4 was born he had retained testicles & associated hernia's on both sides, he also had a funny ear that looks normal now. Also, he has etching in his 4 front top teeth. Every one of these things are minor issues that have been or will correct themselves. So we were lucky. BUT I was told with each thing it could have been something as simple as a cold during early pregnancy. When I told them of the throat infection & the timing they all said Yep, that would have done it.. Mind you I was about 4 - 5 weeks when I had that.
I posted about it on here a while back & another member replied with her story that was similar to mine but her little had had issues with his Kidneys. She was also told, something as simple as a cold.
I hope I don't scare you with that, but Im just being honest. It can happen but I think generally everything will be fine. I think its possible more the high temps that are something to be careful about. xox Congratulations on your pregnancy too BTW :D
Hmm bugger. I'll just up my anti-cold foods and try to rest up. Alas there's nothing much more one can do with a cold. I'm more worried about carrying the bub to term though so I can deal with post-birth issues if it comes to that.
Sorry to hear that you aren't feeling well.
You do have to be careful of fevers, read up in your pregnancy books on the best way to deal with those as you can't have a high temperature while pregnant. I think that fever would most likely be the cause of something going wrong, most pregnancy books say that a simple cold without fever is Ok. Just take plenty of fluids and rest a lot so that you give yourself a chance to get over it quicker. Extra sleep might knock it over and take a few days off work if you aren't feeling well. Try not to stress, this won't help bubba and just make you feel bad. Hope you feel better soon.
Phone your doctor or ob so they can ease your worries.
I had a cold last pregnancy and bub was fine. Just had one at 11 weeks as well.
Be careful about taking nurofen and cold/flu tablets. I believe they are big no-nos in pregnancy.
Good point surprised! I have a cold at the moment and I'm 19 weeks pregnant. I haven't taken anything as I don't like taking medications during pregnancy if I can avoid it.
Touch wood but I'm not prone to fevers with a cold so fingers crossed. I won't be taking any medication unless my dr suggests something.
It is really common to feel fluey and get a cold easily in the first weeks. Immune systems dip when pregnant.
I had cold with both first trimesters. I think rest is best.
All the best
Just getting over a cold myself - the nasal strips athletes use to open their airways are brilliant overnight.
Ooh I've not heard of those! I'm feeling much better but still have a slight night cough. I used Fez non medicated nasal spray in the shower before bed and in the morning which sort of cleans out the nasal passages. I also have a ventilin inhaler. I'm not asthmatic but am prone to phlegm and fluid build up in my bronchial area so my dr recommended the inhaler as it breaks up phlegm. It works a treat but I have to be prepared to, ahem, cough it all up. But better out than in!
Beachside where do you get those strips? What are they called?
There is a couple of different brands - nozovent (reusable prongs to stop snoring), breathe right, nozoair. You should be able to get them from pharmacies, or even online. I used the nozoair - felt a bit funny, but certainly helped me breathe through the night!
Thank you!
I had a cold early in my pregnancy.
I took Polarimore (sp) which is safe during pregnancy, drank tea with lemon and honey in it and took 1 vitamin c a day. Was gone within 2 weeks (Hubby had it too and had it for 4 weeks).
Im 20 weeks and bubs is fine :)
A cold won't pass over the placenta. If you get a temperature that could possibly impact. Severe coughing won't even impact. If you take any medication or sprays please check with the pharmacist and advise that you are pregnant as medication can pass over the placenta.
Consider the flu injection as I got the swine flu in my second tri. All was fine for me but it can have devastating consequences.
