Dd has had a constant cold since February :(

Hi everyone, I am desperately seeking any advice, help, comments - anything!! DD has had a cold since February and I mean every single day her nose is running. When I say running, I really mean running. DD at 12 months knows how to wipe her own nose :( Not very well, but she knows. A bit of background:

* She originally got the cold when we took her to NZ in February but this also was around the same time she started day care.
* The cold is more annoying because of the runny nose than anything else. She copes well with it, she's a happy "sick" kid thankfully.
* I have taken her to the GP every single month to check it hasn't gone to her chest, it is always clear and each GP (I've had 2nd and 3rd opinions) tells me that it is just a recurring thing and there's nothing that can be done other than what we are doing.
* We use fess, we've done the vaporiser, we use vicks vaporub, I wipe down her cot with eukybear stuff every night, we keep a singlet on her at all times plus a short sleeve body suit now that it's colder. Her back/chest/tummy is never exposed. I also make her wear shoes and socks at all times except when she's in bed.
* One GP gave us a script for dimetapp which we have used sparingly. I send it to daycare for a midday dose for her so that her nose stops running temporarily. It does seem to help for a couple of hours.

I am almost at my wits end. I have been so patient waiting and I can't understand why this cold won't shift. She's an otherwise healthy and happy kid. DH took her to have her 12 month injections on Friday and they wouldn't do them because of the cold :( She'll be 1.5 before she gets her injections the way we are going!!

I am just so lost. Should I be just going with the 4 hourly dimeptapp for a week and see if that dries it up?? I'm just dodgy about it because the GP warned me that you need a script under 2 years and told me why it's not generally prescribed. Should I be buying childrens vitamins and giving them to her to boost her immune system? I just have no idea and I am so sad that DD is the kid that always seems to be sick with a runny nose. She's such a happy little thing, I just wish she knew what life was like without getting her nose wiped every other minute.

could it be an allergy???

Thanks Olive, I did ask the GP this but they all said it is a common cold. One said he'd give me some antibiotics since I've been so patient but he knows they won't work, so I didn't take the script. Is 12 months too young for antihistamines??

i honestly dont know hun, i doubt though after all this time its just a cold, can you ask for a referal to an ENT??

I know Olive, that's how I feel too but I've had 3 GP's tell me it's just a common cold. One explained to me that it's not the same cold, it's just that she keeps catching one after the other. I just don't know what to do. Thanks for your suggestions Olive, I do really appreciate it. I might ask about the ENT referral.

Maybe take her to see a naturopath.

I know my two younger brothers constantly had runny noses as kids, and so did my nephew. Apart from what you are doing, mum wasnt able to do much more. I hope she recovers soon though

There is a Claryntyne (spg?) for children from 1yr - DD has had a few doses lately for hives.

I know how frustrating the cold/runny nose can be - we seem to have the cough version. DD was so healthy until the cooler months in CC hit. I'm not blaming CC, but it certainly ups the exposure, wears her out, and it seems we always pick up the cold/cough/runny nose. I'm also lucky she's generally a happy sick kid too, you wouldn't know she was sick if she didn't have the nose/cough. We give DD a probiotic in her water every morning, and she see's my chiro every 6 - 8 weeks if I can swing it, but otherwise I just try to keep up the fresh fruit and vege, keep her as warm as possible, and try not to over do it too much on days off if she's not 100%. It's frustrating, and I hate taking her in with a runny nose or cough, but if we stayed home every day she had a runny nose we'd hardly ever go. I'm talking clear runny nose too. Some mornings it can be more yellowish but the GP said it just pools overnight and usually within an hour or so it's clear. We've also had major ear probs too but seem to be on top of that for the moment :crossfingers:

Sorry I probably haven't helped much, but wanted you to know you're not on your own. I really hope the nose dries up soon and she's right as rain!

Have you tried the Brauers Children's Cold & Flu at all? I also give my kids a multi vitamin everday - not sure what ones are applicable for 12 months, there are some, just can't think of the name off the top of my head - yep, Pentavite - I think. I remember, DS had a constant cough from 4 months to about 10 months of age, it wasn't until we went to England on holiday for a month that it went.

You could try some inner health immune boost for kids?? It's a powder you can add to drinks.

Is it clear snot? My DD's nose runs constantly as her teeth are coming through so the times when she has had a few teeth come through in a row, she's had a runny nose for months. Just clear snot and the occasional cough as it ran down the back of her throat when she was lying down.

My dd also gets a runny nose with teeth. The last lot were her two yr molars which took over a month all up and she had a constant running nose and fever at night.

:hug: try not to stress. Most kids are sick through their first winter. Just remember it's all building up her immune system.
