I have a heap of stuff in great condition that I'd like to donate to families that really need it -toys, clothes, baby things etc. But I've heard so many stories about items either being stolen from donation points, or worse, being taken by the staff to sell off for themselves on ebay etc, that I'm really unwilling to give it all to a charity.
Is there anyway to know it's going to a family in need?
Possibly look at a women's shelter to give it to? It would cut out the middle man so to speak.
you may need to see if you can find a local charity that deals direct with housing for families in need. i know locally i have a contact that works with women escaping DV situations - so any furniture goes to them - small stuff goes to either salvos or to lifeline.
I would contact your local Women's Refuge. Especially for women's/children's items. Women escaping DV often leave with absolutely nothing other than the clothes on their backs, and the same for their children. At least you know that they're going to those who really need it.
Otherwise, perhaps contact your local church - they know who needs things IYKWIM.

There's an organisation called Givit (givit.org.au) that lists charities who need specific items for themselves or their clients or alternately you can post what you have and charities can then approach you if they need what you have.
I've never used it, but a friend has and said her washing machine went to a family that really deserved it. It may take a little while to get a taker.

I think the smith family might be able to help directly. Otherwise a refugee resettlement group could probably take items and distribute them to a family who are starting from scratch.
