Marks on walls in a rental - I don't rent so have no idea and need help

We are staying with family who are renting and my DS has run a car or something down the wall and put a long scratch along the wall..

Now I get that it is our fault, and am willing to pay for the damage to be painted over, or whatnot, but my family is worried it will go against them on their future rental applications etc..

I am worried about using touch up paint as it may vary, not being the whole wall.. Do they tell the agent that they have had guests, and there are now some marks on walls?

Please give me some advice.. We are in Qld if that makes any difference to your advice..

Dont worry about it too much. Most realo's will class it as wear and tear.

Maybe ring the realestate and ask them?

Is it a scratch or a mark? Just asking cos gumption is great at taking all kinds of stuff off the wall.

I wouldn't worry too much, they do allow for wear and tear on the property and you can't expect everything to be perfect in a rental once people have lived there :)

Pfft! They're being fusspots! I'd say cover it how they are happy living with it and if they lose some bond at the end you'll cover it. It wont damage their reputation as renters at all!

My cousin saw it this morning in her way to work which is when I saw it..

Mel - DH looked at and said that it looks like paint etc from the car, not an actual scratch in the wall.. So will suggest gumption to my cousin tonight. Does it remove colour from the wall?

I get what you are all saying about wear and tear, and I feel the same (maybe this is classed as a little bit more), but I am more scared of my cousin (we normally get on well, but some things she nags and nags about, and this is one of them) than any real estate or money to fix it..

Heinz sticky fingers wipes are also great at getting marks off everything.

Totally agree with Meow!! Pfft!! Indeed.

As others have suggested gumption is great and honestly I use baby wipes for everything they even get red wine off carpet (goodness knows what they are doing to my little fellas bum!).

Get some of those Chux Magic erasers - AMAZING!!! I've tried gumption and these erasers are a billion times better! Got crayon off my walls within seconds.

Agree with the above, those things clear up the walls quickly and easily!

I got the magic erasers, and marks gone!! There are few dents, but that can't be helped!!

if she is with a particular agent in Townsville then I can understand her concern but other than that I've never had an issue (and I've rented in numerous towns across the state with numerous styles of agents) - generally its fair wear and tear.

Real estate agents may not have any rights to make you pay for wear and tear but they sure like to push you into it if they think they can get away with it.

Magic wall erasers are good if the quality of the paint in a house is also good - more than one layer.

One of the rentals we moved into, the previous tenant had to pay to have the whole house repainted because they used a magic wall eraser on nearly every wall. The paint quality was crap and left the white undercoat showing through. I have been really careful with them because I did see some of the walls before they were repainted and it was not good.

If you are honest about it it won't go against you. Especially if you are willing to fix it up yourself. The estate agents will gauge your reliability on many factors, but mostly if you pay your rent on time you are good tenants.
We broke a window in our last place - DH accidentally knocked a chair over and it broke the window. We told them, organised for the replacement, all was good. No love lost at all! Just because it's a rental doesn't mean you can't live in it. On the contrary, you are paying to do so. When you live in a place you have to expect accidents will occasionally happen.
