First IVF and need some help...PLZ

Hi everyone,

Been a while since i have been on the forums as our ttc was put on hold for about 8 months while i had to lots of surgery to treat pre-cancer that my wonderful caring new specialist found. But all is said and done and i have a clean bill of health and back on the serious ttc bandwagon, She has jumped me straight on to ivf and this is my first go and i just have some questions that i am wondering if you lovely ladies could help me out with.

#1- I started 125units of gonal f a week ago yesterday, I had a blood test monday and the nurse said everything was perfect,So i went for my blood test and ultrasound yesterday and i have 60 follicles and i dont think my blood work is to good as they have started me on 5units or pregnyl every 3 days.

So what im wondering is, is 60 follicles to many and do i have a chance of ohss or will they likley go through the whole cycle and do the ET, also what is the pregnyl every 3 days for? I should have asked the q's on the phone to the nurse but totally forgot, i will ask her on monday when i go back again for another US and BT.

But i just thought if someone could help me in the mean time that would be so appreciated. It's just alot to process and take in and understand on your 1st go and i am feeling a little overwhelmed.

I have never heard of that many. Are you sure?! Did they mention anything about OHSS?

Of course I am not a doctor but I have heard of cycles being cancelled for 30 follies and even less.

The pregnyl is HCG to help develop the follicles. Are they very small? Did they tell you what size they are?

Yep 60 follicles is correct i have 36 on my right ovary and 24 on the left one. The biggest of them is between 14-16mm and im not quite sure about the size of the smallest. OHSS is what i was worried about but they didnt mention it and my doctor told me to stay on the same doses as i am on and to just start taking the pregnyl every 3 days. Hopefully monday will answer alot of my q's, what happens if you do get OHSS does the cycle get cancelled?

I have never had OHSS but I have read about women having cycles cancelled due to it...I guess it depends on how bad it is.

Do you have PCOS because I have that many follies when my PCOS is active (ie. not when I am doing IVF and on stims).

Normally they want the dominant follie to get to 20mm or thereabouts before you trigger. Maybe they are using the pregnyl to get a few dominant follies quickly so they can do the pickup sooner rather than later ?????

I would ring your clinic today and ask some questions.

I had OHSS with 21 follicles so 60 is an astonishing figure!!!! :o

If you are at risk of severe OHSS then it is better that the cycle is cancelled IMO, its just too dangerous. Especially as if you do get pregnant the symptoms get worse before they get better. The fact that you have PCOS may result in different answers than what Im saying though.

Not sure about the Pregnyl, not the protocol when we were going through IVF (may have been a different clinic too, obviously).

Wow, That's a huge amount. Are you feeling ok??
Did you call?? Take it easy & the 1st signs of OHSS you should head off to the hospital. I suppose the pregnyl is to rein the couple of larger ones so they can do an epu ASAP. Your a follicle machine. I mean that in the nicest way.

I had about 80 follies at one count but like you they may not all be mature. 1 got an EPU of 28 of which I had 23 fertilize and 15 blasties. I didn't get ohss with that cycle but did with the next EPU of 23.

lilydust- Thanks for you reply, im preparing myself for it to be cancelled if that is what is best, obviously i dont want this to be the case but if that's what needs to be done they will do it. I am not sure if because of the pcos they may treat the situation a bit differently i will be sure to ask 2moro.
Bex- I didnt get a chance to call as i went to lie down and ended up sleeping for quite a while, but i am back 2moro to have a scan and bt so i will ask all my questions then. In regards to OHSS can you only get that after triggering or at any time?
Loula- WOW 80 its good to see im not the only one that has a crazy amount lol... did you go on to have a transfer on those cycles or did they cancel and freeze all till a later date?

I will update 2moro after my appointment, im hoping we will have at least a few more at a decent size...

I hope you don't mind me jumping in here? I have just "graduated" from the LTTC Clomid-Metoformin Forum. As yesterday I was told that after months of clomid and triple doses of Gonal F and a another trigger I still don't have any follies that are mature enough. So next step is IVF. I am not sure if this is the right forum or maybe there is a one better one suited. I guess I just wanted some advice and how people coped with the thought of having to take this next step. I really feel alone at the moment and no one can understand what I am going through. That is why I have turned to you lovely ladies :)
At the moment we aren't looking at starting at least for a few months as I would like to lose some more weight and I am also starting a new job mid August. But I guess my concern is with me being 32 in December and DH 12 years older I am concerned its going to make us to "old"
Any thoughts or directions to another forum would be great.
