Ordinary potty or Padded Toilet Training Seat? Which is best?

My DD is 20 months and I'm planning on toilet training this summer, when she is 25-26 months old.

There are SO many types of potties and toilet training seats out there, I'm not sure what to buy!

Should I start off with an ordinary potty, or is it best to go straight to a padded toilet training seat (that sits over the loo)?
Are there any particular brands or models that you recommend?
Are some potties better than others? What should I look for?

(My daughter is a bit of a climber, so right now I can see her wanting to stand ON TOP of the toilet! Hopefully she outgrows this climbing obsession soon!)

I haven't gone down the road of TTing for my youngest yet, but my middle one, he didn't like the potty at all. I did have one of those smaller seats which goes under the normal seat, but that sucked cos did you know there are different sized/shaped toilet seats and it doesn't sit well in all of them!? I also had a padded one which could fold up and go on top of the seat... hmmmm wasted my money there. What I did use and found good was the seat which has it's little step attached.... that sits over the toilet (seat on the big seat) a little like a ladder... that we used. Do you know the one I mean? lol

We started off with a potty and then after a few months moved to the toilet. We had the potty in the main living area so it was close by for her to get to while she was getting the hang of it. After a while we moved it to the laundry and then started putting her on the toilet.
In the beginning we just had a plain old boring potty but she seemed to be scared of it so I got one that looks like a mini toilet and played music when they wee in it. it was pretty cool but you dont really NEED to go and spend money on that kinf of thing. looking back it was probably that she just wasn't quite ready but I was determined to try and get started with potty training before the next bub came along. She did really love the musical potty though :)
She got excited when we started using 'mummy's big toilet' too. It took about 4 months of going back and forwards but I would say that would partly be due to the new baby and all the change that goes with that but we finally got there. good luck with it all :)

Thanks girls. Hopefully it will be smooth sailing, as there will be no new baby for her to contend with! Or moving house, or any other dramas that seem to upset little ones!

I think I'll buy a simple potty now, and keep it in the loungeroom so she gets used to seeing it around.

We have both and DS1 only will play with potty and occasionally sit on it or toilet!

lol and that is the thing isn't it Feeb!!! Until they're ready... mostly they don't care lol. I did find people I know pushing their kids into it cos they were 2... and it was a LONG and VERY painful journey for them... both the mum and kiddies. I waited and just let him decide and Oskar was about 2 1/2 but it was a year later for poos... lol. Elijah is 26 months and watches Oskar (outside) lol and mimics him at times but he doesn't care for the idea and screams out no no no if I ask him if he wants to go to the toilet lol.

Yep thats it we will ask him if he wants to sit on toilet and get yelled NO, I do hope he starts soon as otherwise his friends in CC will move up a room and he wont!!!

Interesting, I have heard that boys normally take longer and toilet train later. Not sure how true that is.

I just figured that my DD will be 2, and it will be summer, so may as well give it a go. She is very talkative, understands a lot and can express herself well too, so it seems like it might be the right time for us.

goddess... what I did was got those terry training pants from Big W.. and he just wore those when he was around 2... and if he wee'd on the floor, he did and I cleaned it up... but that was a good start cos they get to really associate the whole feeling of needing to wee with the wee actually happening. Elijah knows when he wee's cos I holds himself and if you ask him if he did a wee, he laughs lol. Just not ready to let go of his nappy yet... once it is warmer though, I'll pop him in the terry undies and let him run around out the back. I do think that in general, boys do take longer ... or should I say, that they are later. Having said that though, my first was completely TT day and night by the time he was 2.

I wouldn't think too much about the girls are usually quicker than boys thing. Just try not to worry about what all the other kids her age are doing, they will all do things in their own time.
Summer is definitely the best time to do it (if she's ready) I just let DD go around with no undies on for a while till she got the hang of getting to the potty. Also made less washing for me cause in the beginning she wouldn't tell me she needed to go she would just go sit on the potty herself so if I wasn't in the room she'd just wee through her knickers!! Oh it's fun and games :)
