Should I take him to the hospital?

My three year old son has not bring himself lately. Last weekend he developed diarrhea which the whole family has had. But he has had a high temp for two days which has just broken and supposed tonsillitis. But worries me the most is he keeps on bursting into tears saying his legs hurt. The first night it was very bad to the point where he didn't want to walk. Yesterday was not so bad but when asked he said they hurt. Just now he has woken up crying and I've had to give him panadol for the pain. As the fever has broken should I wait it out and see my doc on Monday? Or take a visit to the ER? Sorry for rambling I am just one very worried mummy!

Has he fallen over recently and perhaps hurt his legs?

I can remember when I was a kid, a bit older than your DS but I would have horrible leg pain which would keep me up at night.

I think I may have been told that it was "growing pains". Maybe an old wives tale but I did eventually grow out of it.

Could it be restless legs syndrome?

I'd wait half an hour to see if the panadol has any affect...if he still hasnt settled then perhaps you should take him to ED.

Trust your instincts hun...you are his Mum and will know if something is up.

How is your DS? Did you take him to the hospital?

If you haven't, then I would definitely organise an appointment at the GP.

No he ended up settling but still had a very restless sleep. I will be taking him on Monday to the Doc's

Oh poor bubba!! My DH & DS have just gotten over a flu which became bronchitis and my husband did say in particular his legs were aching from it, like a muscular pain, he was quite uncomfortable.. I'd take him to the Docs to get him checked just in case, nothing like peace of mind! Hope he's feeling much better asap! xx

Poor boy :( I hope he feels better soon and the doc can give you some insight into his illness on Monday. If he is ill again today then could you take him to an out of hours clinic?

I had a nasty cold a couple of weeks ago and my joints ached terribly, particularly my legs.

If his fever is managed, he's alert (or easily rousable when resting), consuming a reasonable amount of fluids and weeing enough I think you're fine to wait for the GP on Monday. If it would put your mind at rest, is there a GP you can see over the weekend for reassurance?

Fever is back and he is really lethargic. Is it normal for a fever to go then come back 12 hours later?

Take him to hospital straight away.


Just a fortnight ago, I uuummed and aaahhed about taking DD to the ER due to an infected knee. I took her and she ended up being admitted for four days.

If it ends up being nothing serious and they send you home, so be it. But if not...Would you ever forgive yourself if you didn't and something went wrong?

Is there any after hours clinics where you are? DD had something simular a week ago but her head hurt like a bad headache and she had the high temps which panadol just wasnt keeping down, i was going to wait it out but i was worried it may have been menigitis so managed to get her into a local after hours clinic here as i knew the hospital would have taken many hours and we would have probably be sent home seeing as once the panadol kicked in aside from the temp she was still running aroud. Anywho rambling on she ended up with severe tonsilitis, definately worth going to get them checked out even if its just for peace of mind.

I agree, take him to the doctors/hospital. You are worried enought o write about it in here, and a mothers instinct is a good thing :D

My son had a similar thing with a temp that went away and came back after 12 hours. I did take him to hospital last night because his pulse and breathing were too fast and they were really great about it. Better safe than sorry, if you are worried get him checked out.

If in doubt I have found the nurse on call phone line to be awesome. That was in Victoria though- depends what state you're in as to whether you have one, and what it's called. Hope he's better soon!

I rang maternal health nurse and she suggest a trip to the ER. So waiting now. Dh is away on a boys weekend so annoyed he went even knowing ds2 was sick. Not point in ringing him till I know more cause he is 3 hours away and they will be well and truly too boozed up to drive now.

I hope its nothing serious and he gets looked at soon.

All seems well. Have to collect a sample of his poo but they are pretty certain it's a stomach virus. He came good after the nurse gave him an icypole! Thanks everyone for your advice and concern.
