DS throwing his head & hitting me when I burp him.

We are currently going through the whole 'reflux' thing with our GP & trying to get it treated, but in the mean time we are dealing with it as best we can.

DS also has a lot of wind that is hard to shift, so we spend alot of time trying to burp him. Im actually getting to the point where I hate putting him on my sholdor as he scruffs & grunts & wiggles around, then suddenly will throw his head sideways & smack into my chin or face (I think he's actually given me a black eye this afternoon). Ive just had to put him down in his swing coz he was literally climbing my chest & again smacked my in the chin. It hurts him & its hurting me too, but not sure what else to do?? Im really starting to feel at my wits end with every thing.

another way to burp bub is to lay him across your legs, use one hand under his chin to support his neck and pat him on the back.

Bern - I think im limited to reasonably upright positions due to the reflux unfortunately. Otherwise it could get very messy lol.

sit on the floor on a towel and do it? or even lay a towel across your lap?

try feeding him in an upright position to help him digest as he is eating( is BF i used to sit on a pillow and sit the baby in a football hold down the side, or sit cross legged and sit him in your lap and feed him so he is sitting up). Also are you breastfeeding?? If so, take out acid forming foods from your diet, honey, tomatoes, strawberries, tomatoes, chocolate etc. Also bread with preservative 282 affects a little one. I don't eat anything from the brasica family in the first 2-3months which is onion, garlic (any onion family), brocolli, cauliflower.... this makes a HUGE difference to babies digestive processing.

I hope he settles down soon for you, you could pop him over your arm facing away from you to burp him, on lay him on your chest in an upright position to help him get the food down.

My DDs both were very spewy and DD2 had a lot of reflux. I used to sit/snuggle them sideways on my lap, supporting their head by holding them under their chin with my thumb and first finger supporting along the jawbone, then the other hand holding/patting/rubbing their back.

Yeah that. We often used that burping technique with DD - she had silent reflux.

We also used Infacol (wind drops) to help with wind. Have you tried that or something similar?

Reflux is horrible and hard work :hug: Hopefully your GP can help out soon. DD was prescribed Losec by our Paed at 10 weeks and it was like a miracle drug :D We wore her in our Bubba Moe sling (laying in a cradle position against our chests) an awful lot. She was extremely settled in her sling as she loved to be held and snuggled.

Just get someone to watch his face, you'll soon find out if he's comfy across your lap. Also try putting him down on his tummy. I find if I move around while carrying Jim, that works as well, rather than patting him. So I might sit him up really straight, then put him over my shoulder, then put him on my lap and rub his back, then I might put him in his rocker, then pick him up again and so on.

That's how I would burp DD too. I also kept her as upright as possible while feeding which seemed to make a difference.
