DD2 is 7 months now but I can't bring myself to let go of the capsule, I love it so much! It's so convenient because I can just click it onto the pram and bubba stays asleep. magic!
Is there any safety reason why I should put her forward facing or can I keep her in there a few more weeks?
IN the UK they say they should stay rear facing until they are 9kilos or 9 months old. There is also research that says the longer you can keep them rear facing the better. Some people who have looked into this research have kept their children rear facing until they are 2 or 3 or longer (obviously they have had to get bigger rear facing seats!) In Sweden it is the law to keep them rear facing until 4 and the USA is changing their recommendation to 2 years old. Also the British Medical Journal published a report recommending rearfacing until 4 years of age. It is to do with the impact of a crash on their neck muscles. Apparently they have less of a chance of being internally decapitated if they are rear facing. Just as an example this is a quote from the UK rearfacing seat info website "Rear facing group 1 seats are 5 times safer in a frontal collision. They protect the neck and head by distributing the force along the back of the seat and are much more effective at protecting internal organs."There are videos on youtube that demonstrate with crash test dummies etc if you are interested in googling.
So you can keep your baby rear-facing for longer! HTH
i stopped at 5 months because DD was too heavy to carry around in it, she went into a rear facing restraint.
id be either keeping her in the capsule or using a rear facing child seat
Ds was in it until 9 months when he got too long for it, I loved having him in it. They can stay as long as you like as long as they are in the weight range and not too long. Mine was for up to 12kg.
i only used a capsule with ds3 and ds4 ds3 was in a older style safe and sound one and was in it till 5months when he was to heavy to carry the capsule
ds4 was in a strider capsule till 6 1/2 months till he was to heavy then went into a rfing seat
I have kept my last two babies in capsules until they were 8 months old but they outgrew the capsule because of their length.
I love my capsule too and my six month old is still using it. I have no intention of taking him out of it anytime soon :)
5.5 months - she got too wide for it!! I totally loooooved my capsule! lol
But losing the capsule does not automatically equate to forward facing though! Get a convertible car seat and rear-face them as long as you can. The longer they are rear facing the better. Australian laws in regard to this are so inadequate, in Scandinavia and the US kids are RF until they are 2 years plus.
Yep we had Ds rearfacing when came out of the capsule.
5 months, then she got too long. Switched to a rear-facing convertible seat and never looked back. (ahem) She's so much happier in there. We will keep her rearfacing as long as we can.
My DD just came out of her capsule as she was too long for it and I had to give it back to the hire place (only can hire for 6 months) and she has gone in to a rear facing seat. I too have read it is safer to keep them rear facing as long as possible.
We got to nine months and he got too tall for his capsule so we went and bought a good height rated covertible car seat (meridian Tilt and Adjust) and kept him rear facing. We just turned him forward facing last week at 18 months as he has hit the 12 kilo limit for rear facing so we had no choice...if we had a choice her would still be rear facing.
You've already been given some advice regarding the benefits of rearward facing so I'll just say keep her in it until she reaches the weight or length limit!! No need to do away with it before she outgrows it, especially if she's so settled in it - bonus! :D:
I read this thread as I've just bought a capsule for our second baby and I've had a few friends tell me their kids hated the capsule. I'm so glad to read that plenty of LOs love them too!! I can't wait to use my capsule!
Oh, and we didn't turn DD's car seat around until close to her first birthday. We could have left her a bit longer but she was so much happier forward facing at that stage. I'll definitely be milking our capsule for as long as I can though :)
We never had a capsule. We have the convertible baby seat instead. We kept Kyson rear-facing until he hit the 12kg weight limit, then turned him around. We'll do the same with Shayla too. My friend is living in the UK for two years and they have rear-facing seats for toddlers over there. Her 2 year old DD has gone back to rear-facing again :) Her DS is 4 though and was close to the upper weight limit, so he's forward facing. The kids love it though because they are essentially facing each other :)
