Enough growth?
Ok so I know babies slow down their growth as they get bigger, just wanting to check that DD3 is still in the realms of normal :)
At 4 months she was 6.1kg, length 65.5cm and head circ 41cm
At just over 5 months (like 5.5 weeks after her 4 month weigh in) she was 6.5kg, length: 67.5 and head circ 42.5cm.
So thats 400g, 2cm length and 1.5cm h/c. Is that enough? She feeds every 2-3 hours during the day, should I be feeding more or offer the other side as well? She still feeds overnight, last night she fed when I went to bed (11pm) and then fed at 3am for an hour. Usually she feeds pretty quickly so having her attached for an hour was a bit draining!
Any advice? reassurance?

That does seem a little slow - but could easily be the difference in being weighed pre- and post- pooh, for example. The most important things are lots of wet nappies and that when she is awake she is active and alert.
It is worth offering the other side - more than anything she might start letting you get more sleep if she has more in her tummy. But don't push it - she'll either take it or she won't. And the attached for an hour also indicates that she is doing her job of putting in her order for more milk when she needs it - which is a good thing.
Weigh her again in a few weeks to check, but I don't think you need to worry.

Sounds fine to me. Also have you tried lying down feeding at night? Or do you already do that? I find that less tiring for night feeds.
-
Thanks kmn. She was weighed just after the morning feed, same as last time (when changing her nappy).
She does between 2-3 poos most days, and a good amount of wet nappies (5-6 cloth) and she is very alert.
I wanted to go with BLS again like I did with the other girls - but maybe I should try before 6 months? I don't want to go there really cos I like to wait till they are 6 months but if it would help.... :dunno:
eta - Em, I feed lying down at night. Too cold in tassie not to...lol
-
I'd wait til 6mths to start BLS cos it won't make much difference with weight. I say as long as she's having enough wet nappies and is happy and alert then she's fine.
Lol yes would be a bit cold!

I don't think you need to introduce solids at the moment. But when you do, you could put the emphasis on things that actually have a reasonable calorie content (avocado, yoghurt, ricotta, meat, pasta) as much as fruit and vegies.
Given all the weeing and pooing and that she's alert she seems fine.

Cool thanks guys. I just worry cos she's so skinny! She was following the same growth as DD1 (both were 6.1kg at 4 months) but DD1 was 7.1kg at 6 months and I don't think she will be gaining 600g in 3 weeks...lol
-
Sounds normal mate :) like pp said wet nappies, alert when awake etc are what you should be looking at. C was 6.5kgs at 4mths and gp said she was a chunky monkey lol, I was thinking she was small lol. Starting solids, esp BLS prob won't have much impact on weight gain. We started c last week, but she doesn't get many/any calories from it. Prob uses more calories playing with the food haha

She sounds exactly like both my kids at that age Mel. They were looong and skinny. They looked like skinned rabbits lol. Your little miss looks great. I would not be worrying one iota.
I can dig out their measurements if you like.
-
Hehe yeah EM, I'm sure she would do the same!
Kim - that would be great. (btw, I measured DD1 again - 106.5cm. She's gonna be taller than me before she's 6 I reckon...lol)
-
Sounds really normal to me, but BLS won't help the weight gain.
How cold has it been in Tassie? I would try dressing her in another layer and see if it helps. Babies will use their stored fat to keep warm if they are cold, so given winter in Tas, I would think that is all it is. Her output sounds fine and she is happy and alert.
Maybe you just a string bean this time around? lol
Charlotte was the same weight for about 3 years
-
Nate put on a bit more in the same time frame, but he was much heavier to start with lol.
Darc put on from 6.55 to 7 in the same time and was 2 cms shorter than your DD....looks like you're in for another tall-un.
I know the feeling about her being taller. She's up to my shoulder at 5 lol. and that's 3 inches up from only 6 months ago lol.

My girls tended to gain about 100g a week so it sounds perfectly fine to me. From what you've said Miss S seems to be a bit more petite than your others so she is probably just following her own growth curve. Oh and BF babies do tend to plateau and then gain - they do have a different growth pattern to FF babies.
-
all of the above....:)
What I do with DS2 and have been doing since he was quite little is feed one side, change nappy, small play (say 10 mins) then offer the other side, he would normally take the second side, even if not for as long but have a bit to drink anyway.
But you know, the next weigh-in, she might have a huge growth spurt, they don't seem to put on weight evenly - more spurts, then stabilise then a spurt, itms.
-
Thanks guys
Guess I'm just used to the steady gain of FF babies! DD1 was pretty slow to gain as well, but nothing was ever said to me about her weight gain cos she was fully FF I suppose.

Perfect! After 3 mnths of age babies gain *around* 100g per week - usual range 70-120g per week. (less after 6mnths, but hopefully we give up the desire to weight them after that...) it's funny, we spend the first year of their lives wanting to fatten them up and the rest of their lives wanting to thin 'em down.

She is per-fect!! I know all about tall and thin with Bella (110cms & 18.6kgs at 2.75!!) she slowed down weight gain at the 6 month mark.
Hamish on the other hand... He is a long & chunky monkey!
She is a beautiful lil bub... :)
