Long Term TTC's did you layby before you were pregnant???

Hi girls,

I know many people talk about it being bad luck to buy anything before you are pregnant however.....

DH and I have been ttc for almost 4 years and TTC certainly takes its toll on the bank account :rolleyes: We plan on going back to use our frostie in March, however if we get back on our feet a bit quicker (we have just returned from 6 months in Europe) then we may use it in December.

I have toyed with the idea of putting a few bits on layby each fortnight, just basic jumpsuits, bottles, blankets etc and getting a little collection together. DH and I have already decided that we wont be finding out what we are having once I fall pregnant, so it would all be unisex colours if I was to buy them later anyway.

I think financially it will be much easier. Do you think this is a good idea or bad luck???

I wouldn't be thinking good idea or bad luck but more in the terms of what season bubby gets born in will affect what you need and in what size.

Plus the excitment of buying everything for your baby when you are pregnant is fabulous. Kinda adds to the excitment.

We also toyed with the idea as well and these were the big points that changed our minds and we waited.

(Hope you don't mind me adding my two cents even though I'm not a Long Term TTC).

The only thing I bought was a yellow jumpsuit because apparently it gives you good luck. I thought it was bad luck buying anything else :/

I didn't buy clothes or bottles as such. But I did collect children's books and bought a bookshelf totally different to all my other furniture, but knowing it would match in with how I wanted a baby's room to look like. I worked in a children's bookshop, so knew what I wanted to get, and made the most of my small discount! Since DD was born, I haven't really been able to afford more books, but she has an enormous amount :)

I bought some books for relatives who were long term TTC. Ooh you could also get Baby Music too, which doubles as relaxation music.

Hi Amy I didn't buy anything either, until I finally got my BFP. And even then I only ended up getting the essentials ie lots of onesies for hospital and that is pretty much all they wear for the first few months. You will find when you get your BFP there are so many people who have been there along the way and wishing this for you they will almost be more exited than you and your baby shower will get you most of what you need. And if you are like me you will look at what you have and what you ended up using and will be amazed by how quick bub grows and how much you haven't even used. But in saying all of that, maybe get a few inspirational items that will help keep your faith and hope and give you something to look forward to. I hope your BFP is just around the corner xx

Ive been good (at least i think i have) and bought stuff dirt cheap when its come up. i have bought a cot, a crib that rocks, a rocking chair and 2 slings over the last yr all together i spent less than $200 easy. plus i also have another sling, a bath and boxes and boxes of clothes that Starbright has given me for free.
I do think of jinxing...but dont 100% believe that. if it came into our lives and was heaps cheap i took it as a sign to get it.
Mind you i havent gone and bought anything brand new cause i think that is more jinx worthy.

I bought a few jumpsuits, mainly to cry over every month for two years when AF arrived, or to cuddle during the tww. I know, I have problems. But no, we didn't buy anything really until after our bfp, although if I have had it my way we probably would have. In a way though I can see how painful having all that stuff would have been if I had bought it too early, and we were still ttc for a long time with a cot etc all sitting around :(

I have a friend who is LTTC with loads of baby stuff in the garage she thinks is bad luck. I have a nursery full of unused baby stuff. I dont think it's bad luck so much as really sad. Though I was superstitious about buying things when pregnant with DS2.

I had another friend warn me about not buying much stuff before the baby arrives. It's a superstition in her culture. I wish I'd listened to her.

Sorry if my 2c are a downer. You could open a specific savings account for baby stuff and put away $5-10 a week.

I never did.
Don't believe in superstitions, I just figured it might be a waste of money.

I wasnt thinking big things like cots, baths etc. More just the onsie suits, bottles, etc that I could put in a box and put away in the cupboard. I can see it from both points now and think I will wait a bit longer and see how I feel in a few months time.

I couldnt help myself when I was in France, I saw a little white bib with Golden baby written in french writing on the front and it was my little bit of hope to pull me through the trip.

I guess im just at that point where the holiday is over and the emotions are kicking back in, im so ready to have a baby and it was only last night that it sunk in that we have been trying for nearly 4 years :(

I didn't because I had already had a couple of m/c and was feeling so anxious that DD wouldn't be full ter
, so I waited until I was 20 weeks then went nuts.

I bought a few bits and pieces - nothing big. My view is different in the fact that I think you should put out into the universe what you want your life to be. So my view was if I wanted to get pregnant then I needed to send a message that I was ready for baby. I got a few little onesies and a couple of stuffed toys. I did this after my first failed IVF cycle, and I fell pregnant on the next cycle.

I can understand other peoples views about it being bad luck and to be honest that was how I had always felt also. Then I decided to change a few things including any negative thoughts I was having about falling pregnant.

We have heaps of stuff already, A lot has been given to us and a few things I have got from ebay as they were absolute bargins. My DH and I are using them as visualisation of what we want. Also we won't have a huge amount of money to splash around I figure I will keep looking and if something that is exactly what I want at a bargin price then I will get it. No reason I should miss out cause we aren't rich :)

When I started IVF, I bought a few bits and pieces, second hand clothes and some mcn's.

When I lost the baby, I packed them all away... too hard looking at them thinking what could've been I guess.

Instead of lay-bying, can you just start putting some cash aside? That when it happens, you'll have $$ stashed away?

For what's it worth hun, I've still not bought anything new yet...

No I was too scared. Not because I'm superstitious, but because my track record is so bad.
I did put money away though. It's kinda fun buying it because you have a reason.

I had a few things, like nappies that came up super cheaply, and good stuff from op shops. Nothing more than would fit in one drawer. I hated looking at it when we couldn't ttc.

I haven't bought many clothes brand new. Three outfits, and they're special, gender specific ones. The rest are handmedowns that came out of the woodwork when DD was born. Our nursery furniture, same deal, got passed on when I was pregnant. Some of it is really special because it came from friends. We have a four year old friend who often talks about how DD sleeps in her old bed and she is so proud. It's very loving.

So anyway, no, I wouldn't buy stuff. But I would possibly make stuff. That's a positive way to channel your love. And a special bank account is a great idea.

I didn't - I was feeling miserable enough without reminders in the house of what I didn't have. I've only just started to collect a few things now!
