I know DD is only just 18 months and isnt interested in doing wee/poo in the toilet (we dont own a potty) and she still is happy to have a wet/dirty nappy although she is getting better telling us it is pooey with a wave around her nose but she has a very red bottom at the moment. I was advised to let her air it out which is ok, i dont mind cleaning up the piddle puddles. How can I encourage going to the loo? I am asking her but i get a blank stare
My DS has been using the toilet for a while now (but still in nappies). It started when he was using the step stool near the toilet and we gave him a try at standing there for a wee and he did it. Now we have a seat that goes on the toilet and we ask him most nappy changes if he wants to do a wee, and he usually says yes (and does one). We're leaving him in nappies for the time being, but figure we're planting a seed for later on. LOVE the over-the-toilet seat - no yucky potties to deal with!
One little princess my DS is 22mths and has been TT for the past 5.5mths. It really was a struggle in the beginning and some days I thought this is impossible but after 2wks there was a significant increase and now at 21mths we hardly have any accidents.
I just started by putting DS on the loo every 30mins to 1hr. It didnt matter whether or not he did anything. I also got a potty book and exchanged the word 'potty' for toilet. It soon became one of his favourite books and I would read to him on the toilet all the time to get him to stay there for as long as I could.
In the beginning it felt like I was sitting in the loo reading for over an hr with no progress. I also put him in undies and did away with nappies and pull up training pants altogether. They really do hate being wet and dirty once they get the hang of it.

We dont make a big deal out of it. I usually wait until summer rolls round in their second year and let them go nappy and pants free. Doing "outside wees" has been a novel way to start ours and getting them to move to the toilet later on has been a non-issue. There is a potty in the bathroom and one in the kitchen (to catch the quick ones as the loo is sometime too far away lol) and it all gets taken in stride.
I havent seen any special need to have my kids out of nappies by a certain age. I dont see the point. They are ready when they are ready :)
