Pain relief

I had my cs on Friday, Mentally feeling pretty okay about it, even relieved after seeing his size as I would have been vbac with lots of monitoring and restrictions. Not the birth I wanted anyway. My recovery has been good. So so so much better than time. The pain relief drugs were great but were keeping me awake at night while my dh and the baby slept! On Sunday afternoon I started just accepting panadol only and this was fine all yesterday until just now. I have woken in so much pain, achey and sore, mostly on my right. I just wondered if I am being really woosy and what sort of pain relief everyone else took/was having?

It wasn't a c/s, but for my tear I was given Voltaren and panadine forte. I think one of the ladies I shared a room with was prescribed similar, and she had a c/s :) Don't know if that's really any help, though...

You poor darling. The pain can be very bad for at least the first week. You're only a few days in. I did the same thing with my second CS recently and dropped the pain relief too early and ended up feeling terrible and having to take a big dose to get it under control again. The important thing with pain is to actually treat it regularly and keep on top of it and studies have shown you take less relief this way. I'd ask your doctor or nurses for something that won't keep you awake. You are definitely not a woos!!!!! It's major abdominal surgery! No walk in the park. Rest up and I hope you start to feel better.

Thanks Tilda-I think i have done the wrong thing. My milk only came in yest so day 4 and I felt like it was delayed because I was tired from being kept awake from the drugs while my dh and baby slept! Plus the pain wasn't too bad.....but now-wow. I was given digesic a few hrs ago and was able to sleep afterwards so I'm happy with that. Still sore and achey but hopefully the morning will bs better :)

I had endone,panadol and voltaren until day 3, then panadol and voltaren probably twice a day for at least a week, possibly longer......I found the voltaren helped. Interestingly though i recently hurt my shoulder and went to get voltaren and 1 chemist lost her sh*t and said I was giving my baby stomach ulcers, and a different chemist said not under any circumstances should you take it while bfing and she wouldn't give me any!!!! And this was for a 5mth old not a newborn! Meanwhile the anethetist is the one who prescribed it, I heard him tell the nurse when leaving theater.....very confusing, but I didn't take it....

I had the same as Ellas mummy. Endone, panadol forte and voltaren. The voltaren will help with the swelling as well as the pain.

i was getting morphine injections for the first 2 days, plus panadol & voltaren
then it was endone, panadol & voltaren until i left hossy - was in for 5 days.
when i was home id take 2 panadol before going to bed - but i only did that for 2 days.

rest up, dont over do it & congratulations!! x

I hope you dont mind me hijaking your thread! i am not UTD at the moment, however when i have bubs # 2 i will be having a c-section.
My biggest concern is the drugs afterwards...did you feel really out of it from all the drugs or was it all just 'normal'? i have heard two conflicting views on this and it freaks me out that i might feel completely not with it for the first days of bubs life...
I had a really bad 4 deg tear with DD and remember taking heaps of drugs but not feeling really out of it...i imagine it would be about the same??

MumtoA with my first c sect I barely remember the first 24hrs cos of all the morphine. Dd2 I just had whatever they gave me in theatre, then the endone,voltaren,panadol ****tail.....sooooo much better, I remember every second and never felt out of it :) everyone is different, but that was my experience, I loved having dd2, whereas with dd1 I was really upset I was so out of it :(

I am the same as Ellasmummy, my first cs I was like a fly on the wall-so out of it. This time around I've been totally with it, so so much better. I feel "present" and very happy about it!! I think it's the morphine injections that put me out of it last time and I only had one this time and it was okay.

I spoke to a really helpful midwife tonight and she explained to me that I should bs having pain relief every 6 hours. Today I got digesic at 2am, then panadol at 9am and nothing until tonight. So Im going to start panadol every 6 hours as I'm really scared about going home and doing more Nd being in pain.

My situation was pretty different, in that I had to have a subsequent exploratory surgery (cystoscopy) after my c/s. I found the morphine made me extremely out of it. At least I think it was the morphine. They had me on an interesting ****tail of morphine, propyfol, fentanyl..... mi..something.. whatever. It was a lot. Of course that's not the norm though, I was just unfortunate enough to have copped ALL the bad stuff. Multiple mistakes made by drs, an induced coma, and a very tough recovery.

Once I was back on the maternity ward though, I was given endone and panadol regularly. The midwives timed my doses so that I'd have Panadol, (which did NOTHING...) then 3 hours later would have endone, then 3 hours later panadol... you get the pattern. They also talked to me about 'pain management' and keeping up with the pain relief, taking it before my pain got out of control.

I was discharged with about 4 days worth of endone, and I took panadine forte as well. By the time I got home though, I was already almost a week PP. I needed strong pain relief for 2 weeks. Instead of stopping my meds all at once, I dropped the dose one pill at a time, over several days, until I wasn't taking anything.

Star I hope you're feeling much better day by day :hug:. Pain meds work best when you take them regularly so they don't get a chance to wear off. I went home on panadol and voltaren, but I developed an infection and ended up back on digesic after a week at home. (Just be careful with the digesic because it has lots of paracetamol in it so will affect how much panadol you can have in that 24 hour period). Like forshelby said, if you're taking 2 meds, try to stagger them by a couple of hours so they don't both wear off at the same time. And if you're lucky to get a good sleep, get your partner to get up and give your next dose half an hour before you have to heave yourself out of bed LOL. You will be surprised by how much you feel better as each day passes.

This is why I hate chemists. They ask all personal stuff and then give you their own self important opinion.
They scare more new (and experienced) mums than anyone else, and I always give them a mouthful. I walked into a chemist once to get a perscription filled and they started asking me all these questions, I gently at first reminded her that I had answered all these questions not less than 15 mons ago at the professionals office, you know, the one with the umpteen degrees on thier wall. And that she had no right what so ever in withholding anything that I had been informed to take. As for stuff over the counter, it us over the counter for a reason.... Gets me so uptight.

Bug getting back on to the thread, lol, I am having a CSection in December and was wondering about all these questions as well. Maybe I will pose them to my OB at the next visit???? I will let u know what she says. Xx

Ellasmummy - Terrified. I'm struggling to find the right words to describe it. I was failed by people I trusted, repeatedly. I was butchered and subjected to unneccesary suffering as a result of their mistakes. The worst part is that I agreed to the cs because my induced labour stalled. There were no other suggestions other than cs. Baby was not distressed. In a weak moment, I gave in, and will regret it forever.

Ok, crawling back under my rock now, sorry to hijack with my tale of woe.

Forshelby, have you posted in the debriefing traumatic births area? Sometimes we need our stotries told and witnessed a number of times in order for the trauma to pass and room for the healing to be made. Xxx
