How do you stop your toddler from getting out of their carseat harness?

DS2 has taken to letting himself out of his carseat harness. No matter how tight I have it done up, he manages to wriggle one arm out and then the other. He's quiet when he does it so I usually don't notice unless I happen to look back at him.

I've checked out the new booster seats on the web and was thrilled to see that you can get a Safety 1st booster seat with a five point harness (with additional strap across the chest)....this quickly turned to "grrrrrr" as I found out that they are illegal in Australia!

So, any tips? Are there seats out there that are suitable for a 19 month old (12kg)? He's a little Houdini and can wriggle out of most things - this kid manages to work his way out of a zipped up sleeping bag - they often find him curled up in a ball outside of his still zipped bag at the childcare centre.

You can buy a chest piece that links the two staps together, perfect for houdini's :) I've seen them at Babies r Us

Yes that DS2 does this as well this $20 thing stops it!!

They are the only thing that stops my little escape artist. Before I got it she had worked out that escaping while I was on the freeway worked best because I couldn't stop

We had to pull over on the side of a busy highway three times on the way home from picking DD1 up from kindy to put DD2 back in her harness and that is just a 15 min car trip. It has been going on for months now ... thanks for posting this. Just what I needed to know.

DD1 is a houdini as well. We just use a belt and that mummy-is-serious look.

We have the strap funnily enough it's called the Houdini strap! Got it from baby bunting.

We have one of these and it works a treat. DD was unbelievable for getting out of her straps. The worst incident we had was on a way to a BBQ one night and I caught a glimpse of her in the rear vision mirror (before I swiftly pulled over!) standing in her car seat waving to the cars out the back window :o Needless to say, it scared the hell out of us!!
