Mice deterrents?
I have mice somewhere in the house :( I've cleaned out the pantry and everything is now in plastic containers.
DH has set a trap for the rascals but they just won't get caught - been trying for over a month :wall: they even started eating the pantry shelf (it's chipboard) :jawdrop:
Does anyone have suggestions on how to
a) get rid of them
and b) encourage them not to return?
I'd prefer chemical free if possible (given DS is 2 and I'm 12weeks with #2)

I would but DH is against inside pets (I intend to work on this when children are older); we do have 2 cats that like to jump the back fence from somewhere else but they're not catching the mice either :(

They don't like peppermint or citrus.
We cleaned out all our cupboards with orange pine o clean.

I've also heard that an ammonia based cleaner will deter them as well, as it smells like cat pee.
When baiting the traps, we use peanut butter as they can't just pinch it without setting off the trap like they do with cheese.

Peppermint oil. We are getting some repair work done on our upstairs bathroom's plumbing and the walls and ceiling downstairs are exposed and we have been noticing mice. DH & I have put peppermint oil EVERYWHERE and it seems to have done the trick. Thankfully, the real estate is going to do something about the mice in the ceiling & walls :)

or a snake ;) Grandma says peppermint oil works never had mice invaders to test the theory though

Might have to try the citrus oils then - can't stand peppermint smells ATM

My mum tried everything and got a cat in the end ;)

Leckert - I haven't been able to tolerate peppermint since I was pregnant with DD2. I hope citrus works too 'cause I am over feeling yuck from the peppermint. No amount of convincing myself that my house smells like candy canes is working. Apparently lemon oil works for mice & spiders. I am gonna give it a try.

On lemon oil do you just put drops in cupboards or how do you do it? We have yucky mice blah freaks me out

Can someone remind me where I can get lemon/orange oil from? I remember buying some once but can't remember where I bought it.

We buy our oils from our local health food store but I'm pretty sure most chemists have it these days. We have been putting oil on cotton wool balls undiluted but wiping over benches with diluted oil in a spray bottle. We use around 30 drops in a bottle of water.
