purees and soilds
my son is 5.5 months and im sort of following the book (save our sleep) so i started with farex and mixing it with apple then steaming his pears, sweet potato, swede and so on.
Now looking at the book the are loads of things to start steaming and then putting them into freezer bags but my Question is
Do u start mixing the purees together as well?
Also when your going out for the day how do you cope with heating up the food?
Does anybody use the tin stuff and whats it like? i still give him his milk but then an hour later im doing solids how do other people feed there little ones?

Hi, I didn't do any purees so can't help you there. But you have no replies yet so I'll jump in :)
Have you looked into baby-led solids?? A lot of the people on this forum do that. Have a look here: Baby Led Solids

Usually works by introducing one new food a week. So pears for a week, then apple, then pumpkin etc. That way you can see if there are any reactions etc. Once you have introduced the food then you can mix it together, if that makes sense. They can have their food at room temp for when you go out, just choose something thats suitable for that. I gave DD1 rafertys food pouches when we were out as they dont have any of the added nasties in it. Easy to use and take with you.. you just squirt it straight onto a spoon.
Do have a look at the BLS though ;)

Lots of people seem to give farex but it really doesn't have much in the way of nutritional value. I would stick with "real foods" like fruit and vegetables, and it is now known that meat is a very important early food as it's the best source of iron and zinc which are both critical for brain development. If you go down the baby led solids route (which was a huge success with my DS) the you could give him pasta bolognaise as a finger food - this seems to be a big favourite. You can also give big chunks of steamed or boiled steak to chew/suck on, smooth, hard bones like on lamb cutlets, or if you prefer you could scrape some steak into a mash or puree.
Solids are really only a very small part of a diet at this age so it's good that you are giving milk first still. I think most people do at that age. You will also gain confidence to follow your own instincts and find what works for you instead of following a book that really only gives one way of doing things. In no time you'll be here giving others advice!

I'm another that will suggest having a look at baby-led solids. I've done it with both my bub's and it's been great.
I was pretty careful with my son when it came to slowly introducing foods for a few days before moving onto the next one, but I've been much less strict with my daughter. We don't have any allergies in the family though so we doubt she's got any. I also figured that when I gave her my home made spag bol the 2nd or 3rd week she had started solids if she had a reaction then I could give the ingredients in the spag bol to her one by one to work out what triggered the reaction. So far she's had no reactions and is eating everything like it's going out of fashion (except broccoli, which was my son's favorite, lol).
