Pitter Patter of little feet???

Does anyone else ever wonder how the saying ‘the pitter patter of little feet’ came about?

I watch my DS run around. He’s so cute, and he always makes me smile, the stuff he gets up to. So don’t get me wrong, I find it all absolutely adorable and wouldn’t change it for the world. BUT……

I can honestly say his flat footedness with his feet slap slap slapping on the ground is more akin to a heard of elephants then a ‘pitter patter’ and if I didn’t atually witness him running around making the thump thumping myself I could probably be forgiven for mistaking him for an enormous giant instead of the small toddler he is.

Just curious if it’s just my DS that can imitate a heard of elephants so well, or if it’s just toddlers in general….in which case it must be a deaf person that came up with the pitter patter thing…….

It's funny you post this because just yesterday I said to DH that I now know where the "pitter patter of tiny feet" come from because it's all DD is doing at the moment! It's finally warmed up enough that she's running round barefoot and on our tiles it sounds like a light pitter patter type noise! In sandals it's a different story - definitely the slap slap sound. I did muse that the cards that all mention the pitter patter should say 'once they're up and running barefoot on tiles' lol

We have wooden floors and yes.. It sounds like a small heard of some kind of large animal stampeeding down the hallway!
It really is super cute though isnt it.. Esp when they first start walking, I never stopped being amazed how their tiny little legs and feet carried their very unbalanced (is that a word? Lol) bodies around!

human bean – Perhaps that’s the difference. I have wooden floors, you have tiles. I know on wooden floors his feet are anything BUT a pitter patter.

Stevie – I have wooden floors too. And yes, a stampede of some large type of herd animal is DEFINITELY what he sounds like.

But he is super cute. Even more so when he realises it’s him making the noise, then he runs/stomps as quickly as he can in place looking down at his feet and just laughs and laughs and laughs until he looses his balance (presumably from looking down at his feet) and falls over.

ROFL I have said that same thing on SO many occasions, little feet definately do NOT pitter patter they thump and slap. We have floor boards too and even the carpetted sections still make noise :rofl:

I was just wondering aloud to DH the other day about where the pitter patter came from. We have floor boards too and it's thump, thump.

DS is a bit of an elephant at times too, Dr Tal! We're off the ground, on lino and carpet, and I reckon that makes a huge difference too. We used to have a treadmill, but it was way too noisy on the floors, so DH pounding away at 3:30am before work would wake me up and me exercising at 8pm when DH wanted to sleep was annoying for him. Luckily we got rid of it, lol!

Yep, pitter patter.... maybe it's referring to tiny birds or kittens or puppies???

Thump, thump, thump, thump, CRASH, "oops", thump, thump thump...

Wooden floors, marble floors, tiled floors, carpet - doesn't matter to Liebs.

We have the thud-thud-crash of elephants here too.
