Moving house soon...how will DD cope?

Hello ladies :)

DD is 22 months and we have lived with my mum since she was 11 months. I am looking for our own house now as I need my own space and I want to start a life for us. Im just wondering how DD will go. Mums house is the only one she can probably remember living in. She has a great relationship with her Grandma, and im sure she is really going to miss her :( even tho we will probably be 5 or 10 mins away. How can I help her ajust? Shes not the quietest toddler around and I dont want her to get to upset or unsettled. Any advice or personal experiences would be great, thanks :)

She will take it in her stride. Just do your best and don't make a big deal out of it and things will just mesh back together and it will be like a move never happened :)

I have moved so many times I've lost count..... Starting from when ds was about 20 months old. My dd has moved (major) 3 times and is only 17 months.

We bought a new house when dd1 was about the same age as your dd1. She loved it! first night she slept in her cot in our room, and she had a few days to learn the house with us, before we moved her to her room. She was so much better than we imagined... actually i think she was so exhausted from the excitement that she almost passed out nightly.

We moved house yesterday and DD (26 mths) hasn't battered an eyelid! She even had her usual 2 hour nap at the new house then slept straight through overnight too! She's blown us away with how well she's coped.

We moved when she was 5 months old too and she didn't cope as well then but I think a Wonder Week and teeth were actually to blame.

Just go with the flow and your DD will probably surprise you too. Others had said that to me and they were right :D

Set her room up first with her stuff, let her help so she feels part of it. Then she can have her familiar space to go to if she needs. Maybe see if your mum can come & visit once or twice in the first couple of days.

We moved twice in 3 mths 2 years ago when DS was 1 and DD was 3 and it was fine. First thing I did in the both houses was to set up their rooms for them so that would feel it was home and their special place. We talked it up a lot before we moved as well to prepare them and I worried a lot but kids are a lot more resilient than we give them credit for at times, I am sure you will find she adjusts really well! Lots of visits to your mums will help too, you are lucky you are so close! Good luck! :hug:

My DD has had as many different houses as she's had birthdays (5). When you don't have to worry about the tedium of moving house it's like an adventure. The first couple of times I made sure she had all her stuff set up first but the last couple I had her little brother to worry about and neither have batted an eyelid.

I've moved several times with my DD and never had any problems -- that includes moving once while I was still with her Dad, moving out of her Dad's, moving in and out of my parents, living on our own and moving in with DP. She is close to all of those people but I think in the end, as long as I'm there then she is okay and I'm sure your DD will be the same.

When we moved we made sure that the girls rooms were fully unpacked on the day, so they felt like it was home straight away. I also put them into daycare on the day of the move so they weren't in the way or stressed out by all the commotion.

Before they moved they helped pack up their toys so they knew they were coming.

Dd1 asked to go back to the old house a few times but she was 3.5, dd2 was the same as yours 22 months and was happy from the beginning.

Thanks for all the replies ladies :) She doesnt have her own room here, my bed her cot and everything else is squeezed into one room (I cant wait to set up her rooms!! :D ) I will put her in daycare when we move, thanks thats a good idea! Hopefully it will all go smoothly!
