No smiles

DS2 is 8 weeks 5 days old and still hasn't smiled. We are starting to worry about it a bit as we've been told by the MCHN and the GP that he needs to smile in the next week or two or there could be a problem, maybe with his vision but DH and I are imagining all sorts of problems being the cause! He does have silent reflux and so isn't a very happy baby so maybe he just doesn't have much reason to smile? He follows us across the room with his eyes and has started to coo back at us when we talk to him but no smiles :( DS1 smiled at 6 weeks.

Has anyone else had a baby smile late and everything be okay?

A friend of mines baby didn't smile til he was 13 weeks and he's fine.
When she was pregnant her grandfather died and she reckons her poor little man felt all her sadness and just didn't want to smile because of it, but I don't know!
He is a very bright and happy boy now, almost 2 :)

My younger two were fairly late smilers about 9-10 weeks or so. Ds2 is 2 now, met all his other milestones spot on and has amazing speech for a 2 year old. Dd is only 9 months but is meeting all her milestones as well. Neither of them were particularly happy little babies though.

DD2 didnt smile till 13 weeks, even then they were few and far between, she was a very serious bubba ;)

DD1 was around 8-9 weeks too, she was also serious as a baby, still is a little cautious, but completely normal :hug:

DD also had silent reflux which we were not medicating until about 7 weeks and DD didn't smile until about 10ish weeks. She was a miserable little bub :( Makes me sad to remember it.

It was a little hard to hear of all the other bubs in my Belly Babies group giving beautiful smiles but i knew she was fine apart from the horrible reflux.

I understand it's something to keep an eye on but try not to stress just yet, hopefuly soon the reflux will sort itself out and all will be good xoox :hug:

If it helps, my son smiled at 10 days old and turned out to be autistic. So it doesn't seem there's a whole lot to be said for early smiling.

Thanks for the replies. DS2 started smiling yesterday morning at 9 weeks 3 days! Yay! I have to say I'm quite relieved :) It is very much dependent on how he's feeling as the reflux makes him very uncomfortable which may be why he took so much longer than his brother. Such a lovely thing to see!
