Can people be banned from having a credit card?

My not so DH has unbeknown to me, got a credit card and run up a debt he now is asking me money for so he can pay! Our finances are totally separate as he is an idiot with money and I am the opposite and won't risk mine and dd's financial security. I am so ****ed. But the stupid thing is the same company that I had to bail him out with 3 years ago have given him a credit card again! Is there any way I can somehow get him banned from having a card? I don't know how he gets them - he has to tell outright lies as no-one would give him one on their usual criteria.

I know what you mean, I am amazed at the amount of idiots with a credit card! No advice though other than don't give him any money :wall:

I didnt think you could get one if you had a bad credit history. I am not aware of ways to 'ban' people from getting them.... i think he will just have to learn from his mistakes by being stuck in debt.

Please be aware that if you are married and living in the same house, that his credit rating would affect your credit rating too. Even if you keep your finances separate. The only way to stop him getting another card is to let him (and you) get bad credit. If you bail him out to keep your own slate clean then he can continue to get cards.

There are ways you can find out if there have been any credit checks done on your name and address, which are necessary for any new credit. Keeping an eye on this might be one way to find out if he is applying for new credit, although having to resort to that sort of snooping may obviously not be good for your marriage. Good luck.

I dont think that this is really acurate. Dh and I have veda alerts on our credit files. As I am the sole income provider our credit cards are in my name with him as secondary card holder. The have never checked his credit report only mine. They didnt even ask for his details even though on the application I am down as married but the application was in my sole name.

However often a basic credit report will just look for the surname and address. Some credit providers will do a further search to establish who has the credit issues, but many will just flat out refuse on the basis that debt in a marriage is shared, however incorrect that may be.

Luckily we don't have same name and as he has applied without me knowing he is def. not going to put my name on any forms.
Not going to bail him out this time. He can work it out himself. However this sorely tests my philosophy of not giving the banks any interest - that is why I bail him out as I can't stand the thougth of the banks getting all that interest!
I had the same credit card for 20 years and pay it off every month and just swapped to a new one with better rewards a few months ago so don't think his bad habits have affected my name. but having said that, we have been together 11 years and i have got him out of trouble numerous times, so as you said Trav his credit history now looks good as I have made it that way.
I would never snoop - I already know he is an idiot with money :wall:
we just sat down and talked and i am going to sit down with him every week to go through our bills in an effort to educate him in how much we spend and start to take some responisibility.
