Dog question...
We temporarily have a dog...Bruce. Basically his foster carers couldn't keep him and the landlords were taking a really long time to get back to us so the really lovely lady at the real estate said we could have him till we got an answer. Hoping it's a yes obviously...if it's a no then we'll all be devastated :(
My question is, we got him mon night...he is very gentle, placid and seems to obe my shadow. I took him to the beach tues and weds and kept him on the lead. I can tell he really, really wants to go off it, he went straight to the sea and sees all these other dogs running around.
DO you think I could let him off today? I'm worried obviously that he would run and not come back but I really don't think he'd do that. What would i do if he did?
Do yo u think I should leave it longer or try?
TIA x
Oh fyi he is a Ridgeback, 6-8 years old

Have you tried him in an off-leash park (with fence) to see if he responds to commands (like sit, stay, come), you need to make sure he has basic obedience before you let him off at the beach, shaddowing you doesn't mean that he will come when he's off running around

I would probably say leave him on the collar for a while longer. Maybe take him to an off leash dog park or something to make sure he comes back when called first?
It is so hard to catch big dogs once they decide to bolt lol they just think its the best game ever!

Yeah, I think you should do some trials in a contained area first. Definitely because even if he's placid they can be a scary breed and you want to know he understands who's boss and will do what he's told.

He was amazing, after the beach I took him to the park and he stayed right by me, came when I called and was friendly to other dogs. He even sat there at my side when I was texting. Feeling pretty lucky what an amazing dog!

That's awesome - how nice for you that he is well behaved :)

Lol, CQ, I just posted a thread about training a puppy to recall! Maybe I need Bruce to come and teach Roxy how it's done!
