School choirs

Our school's choir sings with recorded music. So you hear the actual song and the kids struggling to sing louder than the recording. When I was in school, we had someone play the music on a piano while we sang. Is that old-fashioned now? Is this how school choirs do it? I think it sounds awful. WTYT?

I dont have any kids in school yet but gosh that sounds terrible, i hope not.

I am a Performing Arts teacher and yep that is what I do - purely because I can't play an instrument! As far as PA teachers go though, I am a bit rare in that, but even so most I know use CD's. Having said that though, most good teachers will find a backing track for kids to sing with rather than trying to compete over a CD. I also do a bit of a cappella work where the kids sing without anything behind them which is lovely.

we had someone on the piano when we sang in the choir in high school even the new pop songs :dunno: if i was their teacher and i had to use a cd i would get a backing track

At my school, we always use instruments when others are singing. Sometimes just a piano, but other times a small band. Singing with a lyrics CD would just sound awful.
