Hi everyone just looking for some advise, me and DP recently invested in a lovely new matress just in time for our DD to be born.
Just wondering if a mattress protector be enough to protect it from my waters breaking as its only a cheapie, cant afford an expensive one if its not enough maybe I should buy some garbage bags to put under the mattress protector? What did you do and was it enough?
I used blankets from the op shop, I washed them in 95 degree hot water which felted it and made it water tight. Much nicer then sleeping on anything crinkly and plastic! And really really cheap too!
I had one of our summer doonas doubled up under the fitted sheet on my side of the bed for my hips and figured that would be enough. I actually felt and heard my waters break and managed to make it to the tiles in the ensuite anyway.
I'm planning to use brolly sheets that I've bought for when DS is a bit older.
Last time I put some towels down. I figure if your waters break you just need to jump up and pull the wet sheet straight off the bed. And make sure DH washes them before you come home! xo
We also bought a new mattress when I was pregnant and decided it was worth spending the $100 for a waterproof mattress protector. They're not plasticy, you don't even notice they're there. And while my waters didn't break in bed, I've been pretty thankful that we made that purchase decision in the couple of years since - BM smells awful when it dries on something and toddler vomit comes without warning.
My waters broke in bed but I had time to jump into the ensuite before there was a gush. You can by waterproof matress protectors, they are very plasticy and noisy. I have them on my DD's beds and then have a quilted matress protector ontop so its not noisy or uncomfertable. If they have an accident then i need to wash the bedding a 2 matress protectors but much easier than cleaning the matress
I think only a small percentage of women have their waters break before or at the onset of labour, most of the time you will have contractions first so will have time to throw some extra towels on the bed if you want to lie down. I was one of the small number of women who had their waters break before labour, in bed both times!
We got a new mattress just before DD was born and we bought a good quality protector, not just for the possibility that my waters might break in bed, but as a PP mentioned, breastmilk and spews and other things. SO glad we have it. My waters did break while I was on the bed, although I'd been having some light contractions so I knew I was in labour, so I had a towel down and a pad on. I felt and heard them break also so I was able to waddle to the tiled bathroom.

My waters didn't break while I was in bed, but I had put a couple of folded up towels inside a garbage bag, then put that under our bottom sheet just in case. It was actually really comfy!
I have pinkies (some nurses call them Kylies). You can usually get them fairly cheap on ebay. Or if you know a nurse, ask them if they can source one ;)
You can get waterproof matress protectors that aren't crinkly. They feel cloth-like. I have one on my bed for life's other messes ;)
Yep, Target do a good range but they are a bit pricey, we bought one for DDs new king single a few weeks back. I think it was around $50. Well worth it though.:
I put a cot waterproof protector under my sheets.
We have recently bought a new bed and mattress too (bliss :) ) We invested in a mattress protector that zips over the whole mattress and actually guarantees to protect the mattress - I actually found post birth LOTS messier than my waters breaking lol
We had a mattress protector (don't think its actually waterproof though- had it for many years but never really tested it) and just some folded up towels...which I had prepared the week before DS1 was actually born (I had a feeling he would arrive early- arriving at 37+1). Thankfully the night DS1 decided he was ready...I woke at 2am (as I usually did) with much more pressure then usual to pee...my waters broke when I sat on the toilet (our bed was also only a few months old and cost us a small fortune...so was lucky with that one). With DS2- my waters were broken during labour (so was lucky with that one too).
I think its a really small percentage of your waters breaking like that though isn't it (I can remember that being said at our birthing class)- but its when your not prepared for it- thats when it'll happen hey (my friends waters broke on their lounge...they bought a new lounge after that).
And yeah...you can get non-crinkly ones...I've got them for my son's bed (didn't know they existed before children)- they are fitted for his single bed but I know they had bigger bed sizes (and reasonably priced too).

My waters broke in bed, although it wasn't a big gush till I stood up, however, it did soak through a little later as I tried to go back to sleep, but a few days airing and it was ok. Second time around, we had bought a new mattress and so we just got some painters plastic cover up sheets - and whilst they were crinkly, it wasn't something either of us noticed. Cheap too ;) My waters broke as I woke up to go to the toilet...seems I'm one of those rare ones whose waters break a while before contractions start :lol:
2 towels under my bum area on the bed, tucked under the fitted sheet. I slept like that for a month, since DS was so late arriving. After seeing my waters break in hospital, I don't know if the towels would've saved the mattress, lol. Next time, I'm using pinkies! Great idea :)
