It just keeps coming back!

For as long as i can remember i have been fighting DD's nappy rash :wall:

We thought we finally had it under control but last night i noticed some spots and sure enough this morning it was a full blown rash which has just gotten worse despite thoroughly cleaning, putting cream and even letting it air. I even let her wee all over the carpet just so she could have some relief. But she is just crying and screaming and i dont know what to do anymore.

We have changed brands of nappy to the coles brand as it seemed to be the only one which really withdrew the wee away from her skin but shes in one and its back.. i dont understand..

The last doctor i saw said it was a bacterial rash so she was put on antibiotics which seemed to help but surely 2 weeks later it shouldnt come back..

what am i doing wrong???

:hug: Have you tried cloth nappies? I'd try going cloth (and cloth wipes), LOTS of nappy free time (should be easy as it's summer) and using moogoo or other natural products, for at least one month. It must be sooo hard for you to see K in pain, DD has not ever had a nappy rash so I can't relate on that level, but it's so hard to see our babies suffering.

I'm sorry your little one is suffering like this. My advice would be to get all chemicals off her skin as often that is the cause. Can you try her in cloth nappies and see how she responds? Although they don't draw urine away from the skin in the same way, it is often the chemicals that cause disposables to be so absorbent that irritate sensitive skin. Also if you are using baby wipes then stop and change her nappy with warm water and cotton wool (organic if you can get it). Takes a bit of getting used to but it cleans bums up very well and in my boy with eczema it sorted out his nappy rash within 48 hours. Good luck!

Also, if you have a lactating friend nearby who is willing to give you a little BM, that works wonders for all manner of ailments!

My DD gets nappy rash very easily and then it takes ages to go away. So now I always use Huggies (hate that they are so expensive though) as they draw the wet away, I change her frequently and I always put sudocrem on - regardless of if her bum looks like it needs it or not. This is the only way I have found to control me DD's nappy rashes!

try cloth or one of those non-toxic, biodegradable brands, like moltex. I have a friend with the same issue - which disappeared completely when she switched. also ditch the chemical wipes etc. some kids really are sensitive to that.

I would try mcns as well. DS used to get big rashes when we used sposies. He grew out of it and we do use them overnight now but for a while he would really react. :hug:

Yes, try MCN's with frequent changes, lots of nappy free time, and also be very careful about what wipes you use. When I used wipes on DD1 she would ALWAYS get a rash, when I changed to just plain water she healed much quicker. Wipes tend to take away the skins natural oil barrier and give the rash a head start.

Cloth nappies for sure, we rarely had issues with them. You willl save so much with another one on the way too. Also I think I remember you saying you use J&j bath stuff and sorbelene?? Maybe try using something like Gaia/moo goo that hasn't got any nasties like sls or petro chems in it as that may be triggering a reaction with her nappies. : hug: hope you find something that works.

Though neither of my kids have had much trouble with rashes, the best thing i've found for it is little innoscents bum balm. no zinc, organic, works.

Are you sure it's nappy rash and not thrush? The way you describe 'spots' sounds a lot like a fungal infection. You need to use an antifungal cream at every nappy change until several days after the rash clears if it is thrush. Ask your pharmacist, I used one which starts with B... anyone??

This is a good point. A thrushy rash will have isolated spots away from the main rash and tends to start as spots as well. It would be a good idea to treat her orally as well. Either nystatin (nilstat) or daktozin are good. Both come as an oral and topical preperation and available over the counter at chemists.

yup, I'd get her looked at to see if it's thrush ...

we use Daktozin, and make sure DS has plenty of no nappy time, and that he gets well cleaned (with water and cloths - not just wipes) and completely dried between changes.

Ive seen numerous doctors and even a pharmicist and been told a few times its fungal then bacterial.. i have been given hydrozole when it flares up big time and thats seemed to work.

I will just have to make changes to prevent it coming back.

Given your situation I would ask if you could try the nilstat or Daktosin anyway. I would also go onto cloth nappies for the time being and use cloth wipes.

Must be frustrating for you luv- your doing all you can so hang in there xx
