London, NY, Egypt next christmas

Hi all,
Saw Limeslice's thread and as always there are heaps of helpful hints from people so wondering if I can get some hints for our plans for next year.
thinking about 5 weeks hols aiming to be in London for Christmas day.
About a week in London (DD and DH have not been),
then a week in NY (DH has lived there and I have been 3 times and love it so it would sort of be for DH to show me and DD all his old neighbourhood and see all the sights)
and then 3 weeks in egypt (DH has not been back for 25 years but is only half hearted about going. would probably have 2 weeks in cairo and alexandria - where he is from and one week at a resort such as sharm el sheik).

So would we do this with a "round the world" fare and if so, did I get the order of stops correct?

Would we get accommodation in London at Christmas and would it be a good time to do touristy things there?
What about NY - would accomodation be hard to get there in early jan. - was thinking about new years eve in times square. How cool would that be!
Any experiences / tips appreciated.

I haven't been OS for over 10 years so it is all a bit hazy for me.

If you are starting in Australia, I think your stops aren't in right order for round the world (I believe you can go round either direction but have to keep going no doubling back) so would have to do either NY,London,Egypt, or Egypt,London NY

I think what wys (hope u don't mind me abbreviating your name :) ) said re: doubling back is true and you may need to stop in Asia somewhere also.

Never been to NY, desperately want to though. You'll easy find enough to do in a week in London and NY I think. Do you have family in Egypt? Or a plan on what to do? I only ask because I only spent 10 days on a tour there (only place apart from Anzac day at Gallipoli that we went on an organized tour) and I loved the trip but it was full on. In terms of hurried because it was a tour of course but Egypt itself I found was VERY full on.Nic hubby is from there it will be easier I'm sure because i found being a foreigner and a female (even though i was travelling with DH tough going sometime. I found the people, the heat and the cultural differences vey overwhelming even though I enjoyed the holiday immensely....floating down the Nile on a wooden sailboat reading a book and snoozing channelling my inner cleopatra lol. just thought I'd mention it.

Even if you dont want to fly with them, but the Qantas website gives you a good idea of how you can plot out your trip if using a "Round the World Fare". Its called Oneworld Planner. You can find it on their website.

You definately cant do the trip in that order using the RTWF. You could go Egypt, London, NY. Or you could go NY, London, Egypt.

London and Egypt aren't too bad either way round, just a short flight (2-3 hours I think and similar time zones) - but don't sandwich New York in the middle of them! That would play havok with your body clock.

The week before Christmas is great for touristing in London - book accomadation early and pick what you want to do, avoiding the main shopping centres (which aren't really that bad... but then I have lived in London so am used to the over-packed streets). It will really depend on the weather how things go with London and what you will want to do. The open-topped tour busses are NOT so good in the rain! Nor is the walk from the Houses of Parliament to Buckingham Palace. But some things can be done in the rain (London Dungeon, for example, is great; Tower of London is a bit exposed in places) and there are some excellent museums.

I can help with NY, we've been a few times. If you book early enough you shouldn't have any trouble finding a spot. How long will you be there for? Short-stay apartments are a good way to go if you're there for 5 or more days, especially with your DD. Mid-town is handy to everything or you could go a little bit further up to the Upper West or East sides to be near Central Park and great places to eat. NYE at Times Square would be amazing but hectic, I think you need to stay inside a cordoned-off area for hours so bear that in mind. Incredible experience though.

In terms of seeing the city, the hop-on, hop-off red bus tours are great. We also did a Harlem Gospel tour, a walking tour of Brooklyn and a dinner cruise on the Hudson. Loads of activities for kids, especially at that time of year - ice skating, all the department store windows will still be gorgeous; plus the Central Park and Bronx Zoos, carriage rides, Museum of Natural History, cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery (well, that's for all ages - OMG, yum!), a show like Lion King or Mary Poppins, trip out to Coney Island....

Subway is dead easy and so convenient.
