When did you declare your child Toilet Trained? -as in safe to go out without a nappy

Hi,

Just wondering when you declared your child toilet trained? Is it when they havent had any accidents for a few days? weeks? months?

We are currently on day 3 of toilet training.

Day 1 - all accidents, didn't make it to the toilet at all
Day 2 - about half and half of accidents and success for wees and poos
Day 3 - 2 poos, and 2 wees on the toilet (Yay) and 1 poo and 1 wee where she didn't make it to the toliet (though close)

What do you think by her progress?

So, I am encouraged by her progress so far as she is definetly improving but just wondering when it is "safe" to go out without a nappy on? would hate to have an accident in the shops or at someone elses house!

Also how much later do you try and night train your children?

Sounds like she's doing a great job - especially with the poos. I'd be inclined to not go out without a nappy until you get a good few days at home without any accidents. I would tell my girls that we'd have a nappy "just in case", but we'd still use the toilet while we were out. When we did venture out with knickers on, it was for just a quick trip to get milk/bread etc and then we worked up from there.

As for night training, my DDs TTed quite late so I was really lucky in that they both told me within days of knickers during the day that they wanted knickers at night too, and (touch wood!) still yet to have an accident.

I think your DD is one clever chicken! :) For us it was when very few accidents were happening but FWIW I would put knickers and pants on, maybe 3/4 tights in the heat as it absorbed if there was an accident as opposed to a skirt iykwim. I also found do a wee before we go and took a potty in the car and she could use that if she didnt feel comfortable on big toilets out if the house (she was tiny).

Night, we get about 11 dry nights followed by a week of wet so still havent mastered that one and its been nearly 8 months since she was 'fully trained' :)

Once DD was beginning to toilet train, she refused to wear nappies as we told her it was for babies =(

Anyway, so from the beginning she has been without nappies at the shops ... BUT, OMG do i have to run like hell when she needs to go because she couldnt hold it in.

I usually bring a pair of spare undies and pants because she would wet a bit of her undies.

AND .... at one time we couldnt find the toilet at spotlight and she did a massive puddle in one of the aisles.

So i guess, if you are willing to run like mad and have the occasional embarrassing moment, i guess its ok to try going out without nappies now?

We waited until consistently dry at home - that happened pretty quickly though, perhaps within a week. We then only went short trips with a guaranteed close toilet. Longer trips she still wore a pull-up but I tried to take her to the loo as often as I could. We've only ever had 2 accidents out, both after months of being completely TT. I just got complacent and stopped reminding her and both times she was in the middle of something distracting and fun so I think she put it off till she was so busting it happened then and there - once in a ball-pit at a playcentre! :redface:

Our DD took aaaages and had quite a few accidents - if we'd waited til we were 100% confident she wouldn't have an accident then I would have been a hermit for about three months and the kids would have gone insane. And quite possibly thrown myself (or one of them) out a window.

The worst we had was two accidents at a shopping centre (on the same trip so I'd used the spare argh!) and one time at a friend's house - it was double bad because I was changing DS's nappy, needed to get him a change of clothes as it was a horrid one, went to the car to get it and while I was gone, he peed (running round with no nappy) and DD tried to take herself to the loo but missed. Two wees on my friend's floor!

I would have been embarrassed but we were at an awesome friend's house (love you PacRak!!) and she is TT her DD so she was like whatever, all good :lol:

Seriously my tips are take a change of clothes (or two!), try and get them to go to the toilet before you leave home and then watch the clock while you are out - I found about 2 hours was my DD's limit.

If we are out, or doing something exciting, she gets distracted and forgets so that's why I watch the clock a bit. As well as watching her signs - pulling her undies, wriggling and dancing about and getting grumpy, I'll take her to the toilet and tell her to "try and do wees and see what happens", even if she has said she doesn't have to go. Most of the time she will go.

I think shes trained!!!

No accidents today, even went to shops in a pull up and she was fine, then went to a friends house and she used the toilet!
\Last night she woke at 10:30 and needed to go and go she did, then was dry this morning, so maybe shes already night training??

I know lots of people say their chn train fast, but I have never "really" believed it till now!! lol

I used to carry a bag which contained an old towel, some pine o clean spray and spare clothes. If you've ever had a TT'ing child wee in a supermarket or the middle of a shopping centre you'll know how hard it is to find someone with a mop and bucket. And you can't walk away yourself to find them because what if someone slips in the puddle and hurts themselves?! I only needed the 'clean up kit' a couple of times but when I did need it I was sooo pleased to have it. Mop up the wee with one end of the towel, spray with disinfectant, wipe dry with the other end of the towel... move on.

Once my kids were in knickers I didn't ever put them in nappies again during the day. I figured that would just send a confusing message about whether they wore nappies or not. Pull ups didn't work for us as the kids just thought they were like nappies and would wee in them. So, we did a lot of 'Squeezie wees' - the wee you squeeze when you don't really need to go - and I planned our trips according to access to public toilets. Every time we walked past one I would take the kids in for a Squeezie wee.

Like a PP said, my kids refused to wear nappies at night when they moved into knickers during the day. We only had a couple of accidents and I put a Kylie (one of those waterproof mattress cover squares they us in hospitals... don't know any other name for them!) on the bed so the change was easy.

Both of my older kids were TT by 2. My DD because she was ready and my DS because he has renal problems and I was very keen to keep and eye on his urinary flow and function.

For us it was four days of no accidents at home, then she went to daycare in knickers on day 5. That (the TTing) was very kind of all of a sudden.

For shops, I think it's what you're comfortable with. Our first trips to the shops without a nappy, I took a spare pair & made sure the trip wasn't going to be too long & that there was a toilet nearby, and we went to the toilet before we got in the car (yeah both of us :rolleyes:)
If you're comfortable with it, do it as soon as you want; I wasn't particular bothered by the idea of puddles. And like a PP said, I didn't want to confuse the issue by having knickers sometimes and nappies others (apart from bed time when she still has a nappy).

A friend of mine told me I had to "let go" and just go out already! So we went out day 2 of toilet training, and apart from naps and nighttime have not used nappies at all while out or at home. Thought it would be confusing, like other PP. I bought a padded fold up toilet seat and put that in the nappy bag and also had a small potty in the boot of the car, and just went for it. We had maybe a couple of accidents, but the accidents are part of the learning process I think.. oh look I just peed on the floor, next time I should tell mum a bit sooner.

We also went commando for a few days as I read that this feels more "different" to them than undies and so discourages accidents. Seemed to work.

He got used to public toilets pretty quickly and now seems to enjoy the experience!

i am currently training our little girl to, she is 20.5 months old,
hubby made a step for our loo and she has loved sitting on it for months now,
just the last few days now i let her wear no knickers or nappy at home and she comes to me when she needs to go, and i sit her on toilet and she goes,
i am still putting a nappy on her at bed time but will prolly take that away in about a week or 2 cause she isnt waking up with a wet nappy its dry.

she sometimes has no accidents during day, at most she has had 3 accidents they were at kindy though, (she goes to kindy 2 days a week) so i think thye just arent paying attention

our first daughter who is now 8 was fully trained day and night by age 2. we never forced this on them, kids get it when they get it, we have also let them come to bathroom with us anytime dont shut doors and we never use a potty as i think that sometmes stops them using other ppls toilets or when your out a park

even when i go out now i leave knickers on her and take her to the toilet at shops or park each time i go also, (she does need work holding a bit more cause somtimes she doesnt tell you anything just stands holding her legs closed saying mummy mummy, and if im not payng attention by talking to someone else she will start to pee, :(
