Grant writing

Does anyone have any experience in grant writing? I'm trying to find out if there's a course on it or not or if I even need to do one. I can't find any current courses in my research.

I need to get back into paid employment. Among my many career experiences, I've done a lot of sales proposals, tender responses etc. I thought grant writing may be an interesting extension of that. I've worked in both private & public sector in various roles.

I'm interested in contract work. Any recommendations, suggestions, advice from anyone familiar with this area?

I've done bits and bobs of it whilst working for not-for-profits and trying to get grants from government/charitable trusts and foundations. To me, it's similar to writing sales proposals/tender responses - you just need to stick to the criteria and find out what sort of information the funder is seeking. It's been a while, but most funders are explicit about this and/or you can ask for a sample application.

In terms of courses, I've never looked but certainly our local council organises grant writing workshops. I think some of the charitable trusts and foundations do too. No idea if state/federal government do.

What sort of organisation are you thinking of working or LAB?

I've only ever been offered internal training.

There's alot of information on the net about grant writing, but specific courses i'm not sure about.

I used to do a bit of contracting and procurement work - like your tender responses etc - and i did a Cert IV Government Procurement. If you don't already having something like that under your belt, that might be another option to look for as well. I know that kind of work is well paid and sought after in government - both temp/contract and permament work.

Otherwise, in grant writing - I was looking into it a while ago myself for community legal centre establishment and found alot of books and reference materials on grant and proposal writing etc. Although not a piece of paper you can brag about on your resume, some interesting and helpful material nonetheless :-)

I'm not fussed on type of organisation, so long as it's not Big Tobacco, Nestle or the Japanese Whaling commission. I've worked in not-for-profits, multinationals and small firms. I figure it's probably not too dissimilar to tender responses and I've done thousands of those.

Ideally, I'd like a gig that pays me $lots an hour for work I can do mostly from home, either working 3-6 week stretches or 2-3 days a week. I can do the working in an office thingy, but I'm not interested in office politics, so I'd prefer to consult/contact. I just want a job I can use my brain on that doesnt require me to sell my soul for the shareholders.

Pearshaker - funny you should mention the Cert IV in Government Procurement. My last job in a big firm was as a procurement consultant. I've never worked in procurement in my life, but there I was, process modelling the procurement functions of major organisations.... I used to work more on the sales side of things but DH is a procurement trainer/consultant, so it's been interesting seeing the other side.
