Rashes on 19 month old ...?

DS has had a bit of a rash under his lip for about a week - but is getting his eye teeth and is drooling for the Olympics, so we didn't pay it too much mind ...

Then he got a bit of a rash (little red dots) on his chest ... but that was on the 40+ degree day, and he was showing no other signs of there being anything out of the ordinary, so we thought perhaps he gets heat rash (like I do!)

But in the last day or so, DS now has a rash on a fair bit of his face, plus his hands, feet, legs, arms ... so we took him to the Drs - who said that they couldn't diagnose anything (whether it was heat rash or hand foot and mouth or slap cheek, or something else ...

So we were told just to keep a weather eye on him, take his temperature periodically, and basically keep him away from me (as I'm 30 weeks UTD).

That was about 7am yesterday - and there's still nothing else evidently up with him, but now the rash is even on his ears! Not on his chest of back, possibly a little lighter on his legs and arms, but still clearly on his face, hands, feet and neck.

DH thinks that DS is having a reaction to something in his new sheets - we started him in a single bed on New Year's Eve, with new sheets. the night before he got the rash on his chest he was in bed with only a nappy on, and now the rash has cleared from his chest - but is still on his arms, lets, face, etc - which would still have been exposed ...

So we've put the sheets through the wash again (they've already been washed one or twice before we put them on his bed, of course!) on a heavy duty cycle this time ... they're just normal sheets otherwise, so we don't see why they would be causing him any issues, when his cot sheets didn't ...

But you never know ...

Any other ideas? We don't really like the idea of just waiting around to see if he develops a fever ... the rash has been around for about 5 days, and there's no still no fever ... his eating has been a little light on, but between the heat wave and teething, it's really nothing unusual for him - and his "output" is perfectly normal.

As the Dr has said for me to keep a little distance until we know it's pretty hard on DS, as he obviously doesn't understand why mummy is giving him less cuddles and kisses than normal ... he's finding it particularly hard today, because I'm home from work, and normally would be playing with him tons :cry:

Have you ever seen this?

Is it hot where you are? Maybe just a heat rash, or maybe a bit of a virus. My kids have had viral rashes with little or no other symptoms.

Did he have a temp in the days prior o the rash appearing??

it hasn't been too warm since around Wednesday ...

and he hasn't had a temp for ages (ie: since last time he was sick, months ago) as far as we're aware ...

Is the rash raised?

nope - flat little red dots.

doesn't seem to be itching him or bothering him at all - if they weren't there, we wouldn't think anything was amiss at all!

Are the sheets 100% cotton?

It sounds like a post viral rash. Honestly, if it was anything to be concerned about I would expect your DS to have exhibited more symptoms by now,

Your GP should have been able to eliminate anything worrisome by examining the rash. A decent GP should be able to differentiate between german measles and a contact rash!! I think it's pretty poor of him/her to send you away with no answers but the fear of going near your own son due to your pg. If you are still concerned I would visit another GP.

the sheets are a polyester and cotton blend - but I think that's what the cot sheets were too ...

he's got my old flannel sheets tonight ...

if the rash is still unimproved tomorrow, and there's still no other symptoms, we'll probably take him back to the Drs tomorrow ... not happy!

but MIL said that he had a snuffle and a cough tonight, while they were minding him ... but we haven't really noticed anything - he coughed once on the way in, but one cough? not exactly something we'd be racing to the Dr over ... ?

It defo sounds like a viral rash to me. I remember DS got one which sounds similar.

He was fine.... Just covered! I was in Singapore then and people were looking at me strangely as I pushed him around.

I hope that's all it is. It sux when you don't get answers! X

well, 24 hours with my old (really old - like, probably 20 year old) flanny sheets and the rash has dramatically improved.

It's basically not on his face any more except for directly under his lip (where he had some drool rash anyway from teething) and even on his legs where it had been worst, there is now less of it, and much of what remains is now pale pink and slightly raised instead of quite red and raised.

DH may have been right! Or maybe it has just run its course, and this is a coincidence.

Either way, I'm glad it's going, and hope it's soon gone.

Might run the sheets through another extra wash, just in case ... and if the rash comes, source some new sheets!

Polyester doesn't allow the skin to breath well so it may have been some sort of heat rash/reaction to it. You would probably find your old flannel sheets are 100% cotton. I am a bit of a bed nazi for that and only allow natural fibres for bedding and pjs. It's just so much nicer on your skin.

Rash is continuing to fade ... will try DS back in his sheets tonight, but if the rash gets worse, we'll just go get some pure cotton sheets.

we chickened out, and have left him with the flannel sheets for another couple of nights, until we're sure the rash is gone!

but he's still rash free at the mo, bar a tiny bit still around the base of his hand - on the hand where he often sucks his thumb.
