Reaction to Prevnar-13 - normal?

Both my kids had the Prevnar-13 booster yesterday. This is the new booster for pneumococcal.

DS had an almost immediate reaction - large red patch on his bicep at the needle site but didn't seem to mind it. It was hot but he was ok.

DD now (30 hours on) has a similar reaction on her bicep. Large, red, hot, hard patch. Don't know when it appeared - DH got her dressed this morning and she's been at child care today, no one mentioned it.

DS's has not subsided. Hasn't gotten any worse.

I don't remember either of them reacting like this to the previous Prevnar. Unfortunately the GP is not open...

Is this a typical reaction to Prevnar-13?

Has your child had it and how did they react?

Did thy advise you of any potential reactions?? DD had hers last week and was fine, though I got no advise like other vaccines

Maybe call Nurse on Call hun? They will be able to tell you if it's a normal reaction - I find them super helpful. xoxoxo FWIW my gf's son had a HUGE reaction to his 4 yr old needles, his arm from shoulder to elbow was bright red like he had a sunburn and was hot to touch but he wasn't too bothered by it. Turned out to be within the normal range of what can happen.

Sounds completely normal to me.

In infants and toddlers, the most common side effects were irritability, injection site tenderness, decreased appetite, decreased sleep, increased sleep, fever, injection site redness, and injection site swelling

From Safety Info | PREVNAR 13&reg Pneumococcal 13-valent Conjugate Vaccine (Diphtheria CRM197 Protein) which is basically the insert that comes with the vaccine.

Thanks gals. I spoke with a friend of mine who is a pharmacist and also mum to an 18mth old and he had a similar reaction.

But I might run it past the nurse tomorrow... See how they are in the morning.

Sounds normal just a localised reaction to the vaccine. Which can happen.

That sounds like the reaction I had from that injection. Was very owchy.

Well this morning DS's arm was much improved but DD's was still quite pink, but not bothering her. I think I'll leave it.
