just wanting to gain a little info on the industry of OHS (occupational health and safety) is it a good job? is the pay good? mainly want to know if anyone or their hubby's/partners work as an OHS officer/specialist in the mines on a FIFO roster as my DF is awaiting to see if he got accepted into the bachelor of OHS as we saw advertised on seek that the pay in the mines is $150 000 - $200 000 for OHS work. Just want a bit of info on the whole idea.
I don't know much about it, but keep in mind that a graduate entry level position is likely to be a lot lower pay than what Seek might advertise.
The pay can be good, depending on the industry and most importantly your experience.
The mines generally are looking for people already qualified and who have experience behind them, not only OHS experience but also experience in the mines.
Does your partner work in the mines in another area already?
A good idea to call up recruitment agents that are advertising jobs in the area you are interested in, they can give you a really good idea of job opportunities as well as salaries and other things you might help you get a foot in the door. They are usually happy to give you info as of course they want to get you a job!
thanks guys, no he doesn't work in the mines at present but we found they do 2 year graduate entry programs so fingers crossed he gets one of those when he is done with uni! I might jump in and get my cert in OHS, I am already an RN, saw they advertised for RN's with OHS experience, would miss my little ones too much though.
Im a little late but I am a Safety Advisor in the mining construction industry so I can answer any questions you may have. With the salary it is mining construction that pays those sort of rates not so much production but it depends on what state he is working in. Also keep in mind that the jobs in safety that pay the high rates usually have not so good rosters. Graduate programs are a good option if he can get one if not it is extremely hard to get a safety job with no mining or construction experience. Graduates are also not paid those rates but it would be worth it in the long run.
I was going to suggest what EM said. A graduate program. I currently work (for a contractor) in a construction mine. My background is health, but I would really like to get into OHS, so I too am going over to OHS. I'm still crossing my fingers for a bunch of my subjects to be accepted as RPLs.
