One of dd2s best little buddies fell off a climbing frame yesterday and broke his femur. He is now in a chest to toe cast and will probably be on his back or just propped up in a wheelchair for 4 - 6 weeks, poor little man.
I am looking for some ideas for things to keep him entertained during this time apart from tv and iPad! Ant ideas welcome!

How about those paint with water books
Finger or hand puppets
Let him draw on his cast
A torch and some cardboard cutouts to make shadow puppets
A felt board and shapes to make up stories. You can buy them for around $14 at most toy shops and some news agents. Or you could make your own.
Stories to listen to.
Get some bright colorful cheerful posters for the ceiling and change frequently

I was in a full body cast when I was 5 after a car accident. They are no fun at all. I remember doing so much craft things and my nana found this really big blunt needle and helped me make a teddy. It took me a couple of weeks she said.
I remember I was in the hospital for a couple of weeks after and they had programs there for me, maybe your friend could ask the hospital if anything like that still happens.
Oh poor little man, I would get plenty of DVD sets of shows that he enjoys!
My 4 year old son broke his femur last year. He wasn't in a cast but was in a wheelchair for 8 weeks (he had TENS placed in his bone).
It was really hard to keep him occupied but he found use in a Nintendo DS, maybe your friends little boy could borrow a Leapfrog hand held game or similar. Colouring and things were difficult at times as he would try to balance a tray on his wheelchair but it was awkward. The other thing was watching DVD's or ABC kids. I found that through his injury he did get tired a lot easier than before.
Oh my gosh poor mite. :hug: Bubble blowers, threading cards and spools, Duplo, puzzles, paint, glue/art activities, read along books and CDs.
Thanks everyone! We went with a play dough farm set that makes animals, a magnetic fishing game and some books of things to do with kids. He loved them. He is doing well.
I have been thinking about that poor little guy, glad to hear he is doing ok. How scary - just a climbing frame!!
