Please dont be happening again.....

So, today at my monthly midwife appointment I climb onto the bed for a bit of a probe around the belly and the midwife starts looking a bit concerned and saying hmmmmm, She asks me to move my legs a bit and finally can feel my uterus. She looks at me sadly and says 'its really not as big as it should be at this stage' ' how far along again are you?'

I live remotly and the closest scan is a good 5 hour drive away and being late in the afternoon its not possible to head for a check. I have a the 18 week scan scheduled in sydney next week, and she says she will cross her fingers for me that everything is ok. She said it may be because of my height (I am pretty tall 1.8m) that may be the reason she cant feel it so well but she was not very convincing.

I honestly thought in the last couple of days I had started to pop and look a bit bigger... Should I be concerned? or just hope for the best at the next scan?

I have no experience with just using palpation of the stomach to indicate the health or otherwise of my pregnancies, so sorry but I can't offer any comment on that.

I don't think you should worry at all!!!! Babies grow at different rates and it doesn't mean anything. Your bub might just be small or will catch up later.

DS measured a tiny bit behind up until 28 weeks and then he grew and grew (4.485 kg at birth, HC 39, 52cm long).

Don't allow her to make you worry. I'm sure bub is fine. Xx

I wouldnt worry
I was told twin 2 had stopped growing and was better off out than in, ended up he was only .5cm shorter and 600g lighter than his brother.

A lot can depend on how the baby is laying as well. I was bigger with my DD than with my DS, and this pregnancy I expected to be bigger, but I've stayed smaller than with the other two. It took me quite a while to pop this pregnancy as well. I think the bub was laying quite low in my pelvis and therefore not much of my uterus popped up above my pelvis for longer than the other pregnancies.

Oh, and have you ever seen that show "I didn't know I was pregnant"? I saw two recently where a doctor guestimated gestation as quite early, and then days later the woman were giving birth to babies almost at term! So I think dating a pregnancy or even determining the health of a pregnancy by palpation and size of the uterus/belly can be quite subjective and often wrong.

sorry you are going through this, did she try and listen for a heartbeat today ?

I'm sure if she was really concerned she would have sent you straight to emergency.

There's so many different variables that could affect what she felt. I am hoping and praying that you see a beautiful strong HB in Sydney. :pray:

Maybe you should schedule another appointment & ask them to listen to the heartbeat- even just to give you peace of mind that bub is ok.

Big hugs to you sweetie - surely given the circumstances, your scan could be brought forward or an urgent one done? I think it is awful to tell you something like that then expect you to wait a week before seeing if everything is ok. Thinking of you and hoping that everything is ok.

Thanks so much everyone for the kind words. I wish we could just head to emergency to check everything is ok, but that would involve being airlifted out of where we are to the closest town. We cant get through the roads as they are shut for local indigenous 'sorry business' we fly into Sydney on saturday so I think we may head straight into the hospital for a scan to make sure all is well as I had bad dreams all last night and cant think of anything else. I would go back to the medical centre today to get a heartbeat check (which she did not do) but the midwife is only in town once a month... and none of the remote area nurses know how to use the doppler.
As soon as I know anything I will keep you in the loop :)

inga im horrified you are going through this stress and you can't do anything about it due to circumstances why didn't the midwife listen for a heartbeat yesterday ? that should be standard in an ante natal check up ! i hope you get some answers tomorrow and everything is fine with bub :hug:

You poor thing being left in the dark like that. You must be terrified. I hope you get to hear your baby's beautiful heart beating tomorrow. I cant believe the midwife didnt check for the heartbeat with the doppler, especially given the circumstances.:hug:
