Body scanners in aiports may be risky for pregnant women.

This July It will be manditory for all passengers to be body scanned via X-ray, on international flights out of Australia. There is no opt out option for the public. Of course they say the machines are safe but other countries disagree. America has an opt out option. The science his not very strong in regard to the safty of these X ray body scanners.

Europe recently banned X ray based body scanners because they are unsafe.

Similar concerns were explored in an American Columbia University study were voiced in February 2010 by the influential Inter-Agency Committee on Radiation Safety, who warned in a report that the scanners increase the risk of cancer and birth defects and should not be used on pregnant women or children. Pregnant women and children should not be subject to scanning, according to the report, adding that governments should consider “other techniques to achieve the same end without the use of ionizing radiation.”

The public should be allowed to opt-out. The Australian government needs to do further research on other alternatives to body scanning in airports before pushing through these new machines.
