Baby 50%tile 25 weeks now 90%tile 33 weeks - whats going on??

Hi,

I had an ultrasound at 25+1 weeks (to check bubs kidneys as possible abnormality (which they think is ok now, though will be checked when born) and was told bubs was measuring on the 50th percentile and prob would be about 3.5kg at birth.

Fast forward to today 33 weeks and sent for ultrasound as bubs not moving as much and ob wondering about size aswell. Bubs measured 2.5kg and 90th percentile and has a large stomach. So now they are saying a 4.2kg baby.

I am FREAKING out -I did not have a nice labour with my DD and now feel like I REALLY want a csection as if my dd hardly fit out (needed epi and vacuum) how can I get a big baby out??

How does a baby move up the growth percentile charts SO QUICKLY??
Did this happen to anyone else?

Yep... I was growing an average bub. 33 weeks I had a scan and they told me she was already 3kg. She came out at 3.94kg @ 38.5 weeks.

Try not to let it bother you, really. 4.2kg really isnt that bad... 2kg, 5kg... they all hurt.

My first labour with a 3.7kg baby was much more difficult than my 2nd with an almost 5kg baby. Ended up with a episiotomy and vac the first time, second time no injuries.

The differences between the two births that contributed to making the 2nd nicer were having the right support people, listening to my body, and moving around when i needed to.

My babies all rapidly grew in the 3rd trimester as well. From average babies to over 4kgs :o

I csectioned all my babies for a number of reasons and I can definitely say that the recovery from a csection takes much longer than a natural birth and a lot more painful. Yes the actual procedure is painless but after wards isn't fun.

Because they can't really tell the baby's size too well! Relax and try not to stress too much as the can be very inaccurate with their sizing. I was told dd2 would be big as I had gestational diabeties and they were concerned about her size. She was 3.5 kg so not too big at all.

What black rose says! My SIL was induced two weeks early because a scan decided her little man was way too small and they were worried he wasn't getting enough nutrition from the placenta. At 38 weeks gestation he weighed 4.1kgs. Definitely not small.

On the ohter hand, the scan I had at 33 weeks with DD1 had me being told I was going to give birth to a particularly large baby with a significantly larger than average head. SHe was born at 41 weeks weighing 3.5kgs and head circ 35cm - right on the 50th percentile.

Those scans are so incredibly inaccurate. Try not to let it worry you at all.

A difference of a mm measurement during a scan can make a massive difference to the results from one scan to the next. From 25 weeks onwards is the time when babies really do most of thir growing, so I'm not surprised that there is a big difference in size from the first scan to the second one. But don't worry about it - baby is growing as it is meant to grow and if you have a larger baby then so what? There is nothing wrong with having a larger baby and I reckon that this birth will be easier anyway - you know what to expect, you know your body and you'll work with it a lot better than you did with your first.

Thanks for your reassurance girls - I know I need to have more faith in my body. It's not that I don't want a large baby, I know I am incredibly blessed to have this baby growing so well, I am just scared and trying to get past the fact that getting out a 3.2kg baby was a huge effort with damage that took months and months to heal, so the thought of what damage could happen this time with an even bigger baby is quite terrifying. However, I know that second births are supposed to be less complicated and faster with less damage.

I hear your freak out hun dd3 was on the 5th % ile at 25 weeks and is now apparently in the 90th.

:hug: hun, those growth scan/measurements are notoriously inaccurate. At 36 weeks they told me DS was measuring 40 weeks and in the 95th percentile or something (already over 4kg). He was born 5 weeks later weight 3.7 kgs.

I actually don't think I have come across anyone who has had an ultrasound that accurately predicted the size of their baby, IRL or on here. Please don't let it get you down :hug:

the thought of birthing a big baby is daunting, but having a c/s comes with its downfalls too. esp having a DD at home to look after not being able to pick them up, drive etc, the recovery can take a lot longer.
ds1 was 2.2kg at 33wks, everyone said he would have been a big bub had he been born FT, but who knows, by his EDD he was about 3kg and ds2 was average at 3.45kg 38wks.
