Hi everyone,
A very quick question.....do people have house warming parties and expect gifts/ put together a gift register?
We are moving into a new house after living abroad for the past 8 years and my very strong minded mother inlaw thinks we should put together a gift list. The thought of expecting gifts embarrasses me and not something I would do. Is this done these days?

If I was invited to a house-warming I would definately bring a gift.
If I recieved an invitation to a house-warming with a gift registry insert I would think it a bit presumptuous.
If you have been living together for a while then you would more than likely be self-sufficient and some people may only bring a token gesture like a plant etc. I just think that the registry thing is something you would do for a wedding but not a house-warming.
Last housewarming I went to I made up a little box of baked goods. Not the kind of registry event if you ask me, tends to be more small "yay new house!" type things - cute mugs, pot plants, ugly garden gnomes or alcohol, at least among my circle of friends :)
I wouldn't have a gift registry, but if people ask about gifts then you could certainly have a few ideas ready to share with them. But then I dislike gift registries even for weddings, so I am probably not the best person to voice their opinion :lol:

I wouldn't do a registry nor would I expect people to bring a gift. If people asked I'd say a plant or a pate knife but other than that I think it is in poor taste to expect gifts in that situation JMO
I never expect gifts when i move and never take a gift to a house warming. I consider a house warming as an excuse to get together with friends for a **** up! If you don't have what you need, don't move house.

But I do always take a gift to a house warming.
I definitely would not do a registry, never heard of it. But....if invited to a house warming would take a little somthing - plant, housey thing...
I'm with the others. No to a registry. I would love buying gifts, but a house warming gift would be a small token gift. If someone told me there was a gift registry, I'd be hesitant in attending. Sorry..

No to a registry. I would only consider it appropriate for someone moving into a house (ie out of family home/college) for the first time or maybe moving in as a new defacto couple where it's more a pseudo wedding registry/celebrating your relationship thing.
That said I think it's polite for most guests to bring a small gift without being asked.
