Hi All,
I'm a new Mama of a 5day old breast feed baby girl.
I've noticed blood in her nappies (not every change) and just now when changing her I saw blood actually leak out of her vagina.
Can anyone give me advice? Is this normal? I'm worried!

That sounds normal to me. It's called 'urates' and happens around day 4-7 I think. Our girls had this too, it gave me a terrible fright with DD2 as she had quite a bit of it but its totally normal and should only happen once or twice that's it. Urates is the salts in the kidneys being flushed away :)
can be hormonal changes too.
I think you only need to call a nurse if it's happening all the time BUT of course if it doesn't feel right give someone a call. Just to be safe. But it sounds normal to me.
It happened with boh my girls and is quite normal in newborn girls.
I'd still call the health line.
But I have heard of it happening before. Something to do with the hormonal changes. Hopefully that's all it is. :hug:
i was warned after having all my girls that little girls can have like a "mini period" cos of all our hormones that go through to them. My girls all had "breast buds" that went down after the first week or so, never had the period though. But yes i think anything that worries you you should get checked out.
Baby girls can have a kind of withdrawal bleed after birth just because they are no longer under the influence of your hormones.
It's perfectly normal...you'll find it referenced in many baby books. It's due to the hormones that came from you during the birth.
Sounds like urates.
Is it crystal-like? Is babe feeding well?
Otherwise, bleeding can occur in newborn baby girls due to the high amount of homones from birth. Its called pseudomenstruation
My baby girl had a couple of days of really mucousy discharge and I asked a midwife about it and they said that newborn girls have what they call a 'mini period' and that it's often mucous discharge but is quite common to have a little blood in it too. So maybe it's that. But I always say if you are worried about it to just call and ask. Put your mind at ease anyway.

That's normal. Baby girls can have pseudo periods after birth due to hormones. My DD didn't bleed, but she did lactate! Was very weird!
Elly didn't have the pseudo period, but she did get globs of egg white mucous for a couple days.
And if she wants to feed all the time, that's great! Wonderful bonding cuddly time, make sure you've a comfy place to sit, and let her feed away! Remember whilst inside the womb she never felt hungry, she had food constantly on the umbilical drip, so now she's got to work for it. You're doing great!
Your baby sounds totally and utterly normal my dear. Breast feeding all the time and the bleeding. But call someone if you need the reassurance. Aba hotline and the hospital where bubs was born ;)
Yep, normal. It's called a 'psuedo menses' (or pseudo period) and is very common, particularly in BF baby girls. It usually only lasts a few days but can last for up to six weeks or so.
Miss P is my second DD but the first I have BF. DH *panicked* when he opened up her nappy and found blood when she was a week or so old. He didn't look particularly comforted when I said, "oh, it's ok darl, she's just having a little period"!!
Thank you ladies, your very comforting. She hasn't had any more blood since last night.
My DH actually said he remembers in our antenatal classes that being discussed. Everything seems to have gone in one ear and out the other now she is actually here.

I give mine very little credit, he never remembers anything unless it involves his 4x4. So for yours to remember something that was discussed a while ago he definatly deserves a pat on the back.
