Mother of the year award goes to me :(

Dd (almost 2) came down with her first ever temp on Friday night. Thought I could handle it with panadol, cool baths etc. a bit of vomitting but mainly because she was drinking too much too quickly. Gets up from her sleep today, shivering cold which quickly turned into very twitchy/jerky movements and then slightly convulsing :( up to emergency, temp of 39.9 and she has blood and protein in her urine and a serious uti, possibly a kidney infection.

Why the hell didn't I trust my instinct and take her to emergency on Friday or even Saturday? Cannot believe I did NOTHING about a high temp (my thermometer was showing 38.5 so must be inaccurate). Im so angry and disappointed in myself :(

Awww try not to beat yourself up over this :hug: Her temp could have spiked really quickly in a short time. You did what you thought was the best thing under the circumstances and I would have done the same thing - there would have been no reason at all to suspct a UTI would there? The main thing is that when she did get really sick, you took her to the ED and got help for her and she's going to be fine OK :hug: Thats not being a bad mummy at all.

Don't be disappointed in yourself :( :hug: My DD had two days straight of 39 degree temps, she was sickly but not to an extreme, never convulsed or anything and we only went to the GP. Everyone reacts differently to a fever. It's often hard to know how sick our little ones are. Please don't be so hard on yourself. I hope your DD recovers quickly.

Oh please Hun don't be hard on yourself, I can't count how many times I've taken the girls to a Dr with 39+ temps & been told its normal.
I would have done the same as you!

Hope she's on the mend ASAP and you feel better about it all soon!

DS did the same thing at that age :( so scary. Hope she's feeling better soon.

I didn't take DS to a GP, he only had a cold (or so I thought) and I ended up having to call an ambulance.

I am amzed you made it to 2 with no temps! That alone deserves a medal LOL.
Dont beat yourself up. it happens to us all.

Please don't beat yourself up, I imagine I would have done the exact same, and you ended up seeking help when you needed it. Children can go downhil so very rapidly it can really catch us out :hug: Hope she's feeling better soon and you are too.

Like the others said, try not to beat yourself up. It's so hard to tell when it's serious and when it's just one of those things.

DD at almost 2 had a nasty cold. She had been up multiple times over the past few nights coughing and moaning and generally being miserable. One night she woke up howling and sobbing and was sort of hyperventilating. I was getting quite frustrated with her and just going "look, I know you feel yucky, but stop the silly breathing, you're just getting yourself all worked up" (in my defense, she can be a bit of a drama queen). She went back to sleep eventually and woke again in the morning crying, snotty and doing the melodramatic breathing thing again. I tried to calm her down but she wouldn't have a bar of me, so I plonked her in front of the TV hoping she'd zone out and calm down. And she did... stopped crying and stared at the telly... but when I looked over her shoulders were still heaving. Went over and lifted up her shirt and her little lungs were sucking in and out and it finally hit me... SHE CAN'T BREATHE! Rushed her to emergency where the triage nurse took one look at her and buzzed us straight through. Poor love was having (her first) asthma attack. I felt TERRIBLE. i've not missed the warning signs of an attack since though, and if anything tend to overreact as a result.

Entry 2: I was PG with DS and my back was killing me. I kept telling DD I couldn't pick her up because my back was too sore. DD then said one morning that she had a sore back. What did I think? "Sure. Mummy needs sunglasses, so DD needs sunglasses. Mummy wears her jeans so DD wants her jeans on too. Mummy has a sore back... well it's a strange thing to imitate, but whatever, I'll play... sure DD, you have a sore back too". it was only when I put her in the bath that night I noticed that she had 2 huge spider bites on her back. :( MUMMY FAIL!!

So you're not the only one Hun.
