Giving DD a queen bed and eventually sharing with sibling?

Sorry for the lame title, didn't really know how to head this :lol: Basically, has anyone given their toddler a full sized bed when they've transitioned? We currently have a queen sized bed, the mattress is actually new last year, but during this pregnancy want to upgrade to a king, as we found a queen is a little squishy for cosleeping. Our bed frame is quite high, so we'd sell that on eBay, get an on the floor frame and put some side rails on it for DD, with the eventual view of DD and her sibling sharing the queen. Has anyone else done something like this? We'll start transitioning DD from our bed to the queen once we buy a new one, probably when she's around 15 months.

Is this a silly idea, or do other people's toddlers and siblings sleep in a big bed, instead of a single or toddler bed? I figure once DD is old enough that she wants a new bed, we'll buy another for #2 and they can split up.

Thoughts?

Our boys had a double for a long time.
They slept really well in it and if one of us got kicked out of bed we got a good night's sleep.

Our boys for the last approx week have been sharing a King single bed at their choice. DS2 climbed into DS1 bed and stated he wanted to sleep there, DS1 said yes, both fell asleep and live sharing a bed together and DS2 every day says sleeping in brothers bed . During the day they fight a d annoy each other but love being together.

Not a silly idea. We considered putting both girls in the queen bed when we were transitioning DD2 out of our bed. Decided though to keep the queen for guests and get a bunk for the girls (just the practicalities of our house and future plans)

When were were doing up their room they shared the queen in the guest room and it worked really well. They both slept and I think they liked having each other close.

DD1 has slept in a queen pretty much forever. She has a single but prefers the bigger bed. DS often hops in there. She's never had rails so I can't help with that. I think because they both coslept for so long, it's just what they're used to :dunno:

My oldest boys slept in a double until we moved house and needed the space, so got them single bunks. They still shared a bed for ages though, with DS2 only transitioning to his own bunk when DS1 was about 5 and wanted a bed to himself.

DD transitioned into a queen from her cot when she was 3, never had any issues with it. all her little friends that come round to play are jealous :) .

This was exactly our plan! A king bed for us didn't eventuate in time and so we put DD in to a king single. I still like the idea of both kids in our queen bed, and us in a king bed, when DS is old enough.

My girls each have their own queen size bed so no, not silly at all. Its the best thing we ever did in terms of their sleeping and ours.

Originally the beds were in their separate rooms, and the girls would share a bed but move between each other's rooms ITMS - they did that for a couple of years or so. They then decided that they wanted to share a room but not a bed, so we have both queens in one bedroom and they sleep in their own bed. Either way, one or two little girls in a queen size is still tons of room for me to climb in with one of them if they're having a bad night and get decent sleep myself. Likewise, its not such a bad contingency plan for DH to move into one of the girl's beds to sleep if she is sick or something and crept into our bed.

Down the track when DD3 is ready to move from her cot, she will get a queen size bed too.

My trio have a queen bed and a single bed in their room but I often come in to see them all on the single bed :lol:

No reason not to do it if you have the space, we got bunks with full size singles because not enough space for double. If you get a low enough frame eg 30cm for example I would skip the rails too - just put something soft next bed for a couple of weeks and they soon get hang of it. Seems difficult to get full length rails and in my experience they move down the bed too often past where rails end .

Oh cool, so pretty common then! Thanks guys! I was worried it was a bit OTT, but I just love the idea. DD has slept in this bed from birth, so she's pretty used to such a big bed. I really love the idea :) And good point about the rails, if it's low enough some pillows on the ground should be fine.

I reckon I would've loved to share a bed with my lil brother, not just a room :) And we've got a much bigger gap between us than your two will have!

Ds1 has a queen, has been in it since about 2, at the moment he's in it with his dad lol, but hoping to transition ds2 into it, so dad can get a comfy bed. It was our old bed and didn't want to throw it out, it's on a floor base too so low to the ground. Both boys just like to sleep next to someone so it's perfect enough for 2 whether that's mum, dad or each other. I think it's a great idea.

DS1 at about 4 when we gave him our old double with a door nailed to the side (& a bus painted on the door). When PIL visit they sleep in that bed, DS1 sleeps in the race car bed that was handed down to DS2 and DS2 sleeps on a mattress on the floor next to the race car until he wakes & comes in with us. DH should have taken my advise & made the door removeable as PIL have difficulty getting in the bed.

Its great 'cause DH can take him back to his bed & lie down with him if he wakes during the night (& I have DS2 in our bed). I'd like the boys to sleep together in the double but at the moment they tickle & kick each other too much.

My older boys shared a double for a couple of years also. We bought bunks that had a double on the bottom & they slept down there by choice.

Yep DD has one. She hated the cot, so turfed it to the roof space and gave her the guest (we have none!) bed! Put bed guards on either side, and as its quite high taught her to get down backwards. When she calls out in the night, I go in and can comfortably stay there.

Just be aware that it will be much colder in a bigger bed. I thought about a big bed for some of my kids to share but my mother put me off because she had to share and hated it.
