Lost engagement ring claiming on insurance advice?

My engagement ring is lost and has been for 6months now. We have recently moved and the house was turned upside down and every item of belongings were pulled out and packed etc so Ive come to the conclusion its never going to return now. It was in my jewellery box when I was postnatal and to fat to wear it and I didn't know it was missing for up to a day or a few months. The only way it could be moved was if a trademen stole it when we had our kitchen renovated (there was several people in the house alone) or the most likely cause is my 5yr old and done something with it. Anyway its definately gone.

So I was wondering can you claim a lost item on insurance? DH and I are devastated me mostly and DH angry with me as it cost a large some of money. Obviously I can't replace the sentimental value but it would be nice if I could replace the ring itself seeing as my Wedding band is so plain without it. Has anyone done this and can they offer any advice?

I replaced my iphone on insurance when I accidentally left it on the roof of my car.....

My advice would be, just ring up and ask, you never know what they'll say :)

My main concern for you is that most insurance policies have an extremely small amount allocated to any one piece of jewellery and/or jewellery as a whole. My parents were recently burgled and despite the fact that almost the only thing taken was Mum's and my grandmother's jewellery, they were allowed a maximum of I think $3,000.

I know our insurance policy is something similar - I had to look into insuring my engagement ring on its own policy because the cover provided under standard contents was useless.

So sorry you've lost your ring. I know I'd be devastated so big hugs to you.

Do you have the ring listed with its value? As mentioned above unless you have specified it on your policy you will probably have a very restricted amount under your general policy.

Call their claim line and they will advice what you are potentially covered for. Good luck!

We had been insuring my ring on it's own for about 5 years until we realised that as we had the top cover, it included up to 10k for jewellery. (All that wasted money :shakehead:) So we hadn't needed the separate cover as the amount covered the replacement value of my ring.

I think I just repeated myself :rofl: I'm tired.

Mine had to be separate item on my insurance policy and I have to have an up to date valuation of it. Seriously for one ring it makes up a third of our total monthly insurance costs stupid...

Yep, my ring is on separate cover, with a certified valuation certificate on record with photos of it etc. the main diamond is also lazed inscribed, so they have all those details too.

My ring was insured as a separate item (DH lost mine when DS was born).
They were more than helpful and very understanding. I just had to pick a jeweller and they sent the cheque straight to them.

What LuLu said. You normally have to insure them as separate items.

My three rings are insured as separate, portable items on our contents policy so they're covered for their full valuation amount no matter where I lose them (god forbid if that happens!). We pay a bit extra each year for them but my rings are worth quite a bit so it's in our best interest to do so.

As everyone has said, if you've had it listed seperately then you should be able to claim :)

On a side note, Enchanted, you said you have up to 10k listed on your policy anyway, but it might pay to check that there isn't an individual limit. For example, some policies state you can claim up to 10k of jewelery, however they have a limit on the value of each indiviual item claimed ie. it can't be more than 1 or 2k per item ITMS?

We just have basic contents insurance, and I've just claimed for my lost engagement ring. It was worth $2000 so not crazy expensive but i was so happy the full amount was covered. Just be careful claiming, I've heard most insurance companies won't let u claim something as lost, unless you know where it's lost. Eg: down the drain....if there's a chance it could show some companies won't let you claim....

i learned the hard way that it needed to be on a separate cover. so yeah, i lost my ring in the house and it was/has never been found and all i was covered for was $900 which is what was covered for unspecified jewellery items. - not really helpful for a ring valued at $6500 :shakehead:

ETA: I now have my "new" ring (nothing like my lost one :() on a separate cover whereby i had to provide proof of its value (valuation certificate). It does add more to the premium, but after my experience with losing my ring, its money i'm willing to spend :)

Coming from an insurance background I'm sad to say that Unless it is specified separately on your cover you will only be paid the unspecified cover limit for it. Specified cover generally costs a bit extra and you have to prove its value with a certificate of valuation and photos.
