When my cousin (we used to very close) was pregnant, I asked her the names she liked. She wouldn't tell. So I put mine out there, Charlotte, Audrey, Olivia, Luka, Issak, and a few others. She commented that they sounded very me.
Well guess what she chose one of them!
Just wondering do you share you names with your RL friends/family?
Have they respected that?
Or do you think it's a first in best dressed type thing?
DH and SIL both wanted to use the same name. It was bloody awful so I put my foot down and gave it to SIL.
That is exactly why I told NO one names I liked because I would want to poke pins in eyes if someone close to me used name I loved!
I don't share names and prefer others don't share there faves with me. That way if I were to use someone elses name (and visa versa) then no one can say it was 'stolen'. On the other hand, I know it's a bit unusual, but there is no rule that people in the same family or friends can't use the same name. I know I'm seriously considering using DH's cousins name for our next baby if we have a girl. I've loved this name all my life. It might be a bit confusing for DHs grandma to have a granddaughter and great granddaughter with the same name, but we aren't too fussed.
I share with some people but not many. My sister knows my names list and she knows what I'd be like if she used them before I finished having kids. We had one name the same but it was on my maybe list and her top name so I took it off my list all together.
First in best dressed I think. Besides, you had a few names to choose from. Unless there was a sentimental reason for a particular name of course. :)
Oh I forgot to add after her comment on the names sounding very me, she screwed her nose up and said nah don't really like any of them!!
My other besties and I do like a couple of the same names, but since we all married our surnames are different and we have 'swapped'.
They're all very popular names at the moment so perhaps it's not surprising that she's chosen one.
I dont like the term best in best dressed. I'm a bit protective of my names, as I have had them picked for so long, had I used them when I wanted to (10years ago) it wouldn't be problem, but things out of my control meant that I can't use them until now, so everytime i see someone else has used one of the names I feel cheated, because it's not my fault I didn't get in there first itms.
I do worry that a book or something will come out and ruin the names for me, infact one of the characters in Twilight has a very simular name to my girls name, and I am so thankful its not the same name, cause I dont want the name assossiated with pop culture etc.. as though I'm copying, even though I'm not.
Depsite this, I'm still using them, even though one of the names is increasing in popularity, I dont care because I picked them before that. so =P
I would be miffed if it was a family or close friend who knew I had my heart set on that name and they hadn't talked to me about it. on my mums side there are two Michaels (one married in so out of anyone's control) and they just get called by their first and second names without any issues.
That being said, a reasonably close friend in school named her DOG the same name as my DS a few months after DS was born... :ninja:
I was the bigger person and still invited her to my wedding despite the severe temptation not to.

It depends to me. SIL was so angry at us when she recently found out her little one that's due in August is a girl. They had planned to use Sophie if they had a daughter but we got in first. We didn't know but we are still at fault and she gets quite mad that we "stole her name and ruined it". Admittedly if she were to use it I would cut ties but purely because my DD has no future just a name and I hate to hear another child I regularly would see with it. ITMS.
I only had one girls name and one boys name that i wanted to keep and i made sure that all my friends knew them, the boys name not so fussed but the girls name was one i had for about 8 years so i would have been ****ed if anyone close to me used it....ironicaly about a month after i had my daughter Victoria Beckham named hers the same....i will be annoyed if there is a heap of little bogan Harpers in my daughters class!
My sisters and I have an agreement not to use the favorite names of each other. Besides that we are not telling people as to be honest they just have to put up with it once he is born. I really liked the same girls name as one sis so bowed out and left that one to her. I since have the most adorable girls name and hopefully get to use it next time
My sister had a name she faught for for year. Became quiet nasty as I had more kids and she couldn't fall pregnant.
She made me sign a contract saying I wouldn't use xyz. I was a upset as they were names DH and I both liked but I did it.
Then years later she goes and has a daughter and doesn't use the bloody name!!!!

It's funny how protective we become over names. I'm sure it's just us ladies, as I know when I told DH my cousins baby name, he said it was really sweet name. But he did remember I loved it. I once asked him if had names he thought he might one day name his children, but he looked at me like I'd asked him how to solve world peace!!!
I'm lucky my sister and brother are a lot younger to be worrying about kids right now, and my besties (they are sisters) we all agreed to allow and swap names.
But I guess sharing on BB is all good!!!
I never tell names & this ones names are a secret. The names we like are different to what my sister & brother like, so no issues there. We did have some boys names on our list when pg with DD and they have since been used by friends (they didn't know our names) or new friends we've made, their children are those names. I would be upset if someone I saw regularly used a name that I had shared, unless they said at the same time that they liked it too. I'd probably then find another backup name in case. It is really hard b/c you are going to meet someone along the way in your life that may stay in your life that has named their kids the same.... I guess that is a little different. I would have been annoyed at your cousin, especially when she said she didn't like any of them, why not just be honest and say it is on their list too?
I don't think people can own names and therefore people can't steal them either. If anybody used my daughter's names, I would think they had great taste ;)
So far nobody I know has done so but there is still plently of time in their lives lol. If somebody had used a name I had wanted to before me, I would have just used it myself also... I don't really see the big deal in sharing names, there are a few reasons where I think it would be insensitive or inappropriate such as RB's case but in general I don't have issue with it.
It's not something that bothers me. My DS's first name is really common, so no ownership rights there, but his middle name is very unusual. I'd probably appreciate someone having the guts to use his middle name as a first name!
