What age did they want more distance?

I guess this is a question for those with older children? Today I was sitting in the day care room and DS refused to let me go (not an unusual occurrence) and his friends would come over to where we were and ask him to come and play or what he was doing and his response was that he was "playing with mummy". So matter of fact. And tbh I loved it! I loved that he still wants me. And it got me to thinking, at what age do they stop wanting mummy in that capacity and are wanting more distance? Is it something that comes with school? Like I said I love that he is so open and wanting me involved at the moment. :) Although hanging on for dear life while trying to leave the room is not so endearing... ;)

My nearly 7 year old still loves cuddles and playing with me so I'll make the most of it while it lasts :)

My eldest is 4.5 and is still in the needing mummy stage so I can't answer the question but have often wondered myself at what age he'll start the whole "don't kiss me or touch me in public" routine lol

I think it's entirely a personality thing.

Until high school... then you'll definitely be embarrassing. ;)

My 15 and 13 year olds still snuggle up on the couch with us and want to be around us. We mustn't be embarrassing parents.

Yay you! (Do they snuggle with you when their friends are over though?? Or kiss you goodbye at the school gate?) I reckon parents in public places are embarrassing until you reach... hmmm... 30?

I'm a teacher, so I see lots if good byes. It really depends on the child. Some are still not happy to leave their mums when they are in grade one, some, not many, still cry in year 3. I refused to go on school camp in year 8 cause I would miss my mum too much! You probably still have a few years of cuddles yet. Enjoy them while they last.

Ps-just realised, those children were all girls. Haven't seen much separation anxiety in boys in year one or older.
