Applying for a job completely different to your qualifications......

As most of you know I am a Primary Teacher. We are moving to the beach by the end of the year :dance: and I have been searching for and will more than likely end up getting a job as a teacher down there.

A job has recently come up though that my MIL thinks I should go for. Problem is it isn't within my qualifications, but I *think* I could do it( I also think I can do lots of stuff I probably can't but that's just me - then again I also doubt myself and think I can't do stuff I probably can. :rolleyes:

So have you ever gone out on a limb, changed careers and ended up doing something completely different to what you trained in???

My biggest concern is addressing the KSC because there are lots of *demonstrateds* which I will have trouble answering and will have to make up hypotheticals somehow linking teaching and tourism :rofl:

Like my chances????

ETA: I should add I also have a Cert IV in tourism as well as a double Bachelor in Teaching and Applied Science. If anyone is in HR and has any tips for how to go about applying for something I don't have experience in but definitely have the skills for that would be ace!!

I think you can demonstrate transferable skills to almost any job, and sometimes if you are from a completely different background to all other applications it will be that extra push to help you stand out from the crowd. One things for sure you'll not get it if you don't apply, I say go for it!

What have you got to lose? Go for it Tan. I think there are many qualities and skills learned from one profession that can be utilised well in another, with the added benefit that you will often bring a different perspective and mind set that someone who has been working in the industry for years may not have.

Thanks ladies! Sometimes I just need a boost! I do have all the skills that they are asking for, just lacking some of the industry knowledge so will put in my app and see how I go!!

Demonstrate how you have the knowledge within your still-sets, then you can state that you've done research on x,y,z and that your skills transfer to similar in a,b,c ways.

Yes I have, I had an IT background and before I moved I was a policy adviser. Right now I'm going through another career change, am working as a project coordinator while I'm studying something completely different.

in your resume refer to "skills acquired" rather than " duties include" ITMS? refer to transferable skills etc.

You know, "they" say that men and women look at jobs differently. If a job has 10 requirements, men will look at it and say "i have 4, it's a goer". Women will look at it and say "I have only 8, I can't do it". So ... go for it. You can do it. If you didn't think you could, you wouldn't be asking for validation!

Ok so doof head that I am = I HAVE a Cert IV in Tourism :o I forgot about it :rofl: It was so long ago, so do I put the year I got it on my resume or just list it under my qualifications??? It was in 1998 that I graduated from it?? (Oh MAN feeling so old)

Yes, you need to put the year you got it, as well as the institution that you got it from. Write a really good cover letter, explaining how you have the skills for the job, then do as Delphmoon suggested, and list Skills Acquired in the jobs that you've had. GL.

Go for it Tan! If you don't you will always wonder "what if?"

As the others said, look at your transferable skills and identify where you have the knowledge. Even without the experience you can demonstrate where you have done something similar.

Writing my app tonight! Kids are at mums so am going to sit and work out how on earth to word all these "Demonstrateds" when I've not worked in the industry! Figure I have nothing to lose!

"demonstrate" how you've done similar things in your industry and how this relates to the skills they require within the new industry :)

all skills are transferable and sometimes a new fresh approach is what's needed.
Do you mind me asking what industry you are coming from and going to? (but if you want to keep that private I understand that too :) )

Coming from teaching going to tourism/marketing!!! Having a really good look at the criteria right now - really think I have about a 1% chance of getting an interview - am really going to struggle to do these criteria well with no way to link back to anything in tourism!! Oh well, gonna have a crack!

hmm. some thoughts that come to mind
* communication skills
*attention to detail
* ability to organise in difficult circumstances
* computer/technology skills
*administration duties

these are all skills you have which enhance your ability to teach and you can use these skills in your new job :) You can teach which means you can learn...learn to do something new ;)

If you were running a business or In charge of employing someone, would you write down that the person needed average skills/average experience?? No way. They write down the most they want someone to have and sift through how people address these.....
