Still the flu, or something else?

I had the flu or a cold (what is the difference?) before Mack was born. It wasn't *too* bad, but still misery-inducing. Pretty much as soon as he was born, it kicked in, full on. The mw's and mchn each said something to me about feeling 'fluey', and that sometimes its mastitis/just milk coming in/other issues that you should see the dr about quite asap.

Well the whole time I was in hospital, I felt like this. And I still feel like it. I have chills in my back and sides, and my legs ache from feeling "cold", and my head hurts. This silly cough just won't quite leave. It is a pathetic little cough when it comes out, making everything ache. My blood loss had just about disappeared whilst still in hospital, but has come back. It's now petering off again, but was told *that* could be an issue too.

I am wondering if I need to see a dr today (would need to go to emergency at the hospital, as no other dr's around today). I don't know if I have a temperature, and I'm out of panadol. I'm happily using Mack as a hot water bottle, he's asleep on my lap.

I think you definitely need to see a dr tomorrow if you can't see one today.

Thanks Tinks. I will. The Man thinks I should take a cold and flu tablet, but even though it doesn't say not to take while bf, I don't think I should have them. Especially as they are the ones with pseudoephedrine.

Perhaps try giving that pharmacist (can't think of his name off hand) at Monash (I think) a call... Rodney Whyte??? and see if there is something over the counter you can take whilst recovery from birth & bf. I hope you feel better soon ((hugs))

RhiChiChi; Thank you for that. I don't have any chemists open in town today. The only option is casualty at the hospital, or what I might find at Coles or Woolies. :( I found some paracetemol (sp?) in my handbag about twenty minutes ago, so I really hope it will do somethin positive. I also called the nurse on call to ask about the cold amd flu tablets. She said the only info they have is to consult your local doctor. Oh well. Thankfully all I have to do with Mack is hold him while he sleeps (which conveniently is a lot if I hold him), or bf him. Wow, just put him back on the bb, they are SO hot, like I've been cuddling a heat pack!

Hugs. Get to the dr ASAP. And don't take and meds that say not to while breastfeeding. Hope it's nothing Hun xxx

If I were you I would go to the emergency room to see a doctor tonight. Hope you feel better soon xx

Thanks guys. The Man has gone out for a bit, so ds and dd are home with me and Mack. Hopefully I can go soon...

I think that if you feel fluey & your bb are hot you should def get to the dr asap - they sound like symptoms of mastitis.

Hope the paracetemol helps though :hug:

Cold and flu tablets aim to dry up your excess secretions, specifically a snotty nose. They will also dry up your breast milk. Don't take them, just keep up the paracetamol (your DH could get you some more at the supermarket), drink plenty of fluids and try to get some rest. If you have felt this way for a couple of weeks with no distinct worsening of your symptoms in the past 24 hours you are probably fine to see your GP tomorrow.

I didn't get to the dr yesterday. Unfortunately. I wish I had. Went today though. Actually managed to have a shower and be reasonably presentable, and feel like leaving the house. Turns out I do have mastitis, hence the super temperature. Unfortunately its in the bb with the really badly grazed nipple, making regular feeding very painful. Have antibiotics, and been told to take panadol *and* nurofen. The nurofen surprised me as I wasn't aware it could be taken during bf, however the second dr I saw assured me it was okay. So I have to make sure it doesn't get worse over the next two to three days, but still go to the local gp for a check anyway.

oh no, you poor thing. if feeding is painful, can you express from that side to help move the milk?

HotI; the second dr actually said I should continue feeding from that sore side, as well as express as often as possible.

I do feel a little better today, if I could get rid of this headache would be even better. Had a physio appointment today, and it was torturous! I have two new, very tender points at the base of my neck, just in my shoulders, and the physio was pressing quite hard on these points.... And the pain that shot up my neck into my head! OMG! Agony! Owwww...... Guess its a good distraction from the mastitis!
