Hi, I work for a not for profit childcare centre and I am trying to work out if we can raise money to purchase new equipment/resources for our centre. We are getting mixed messages about wether we can or not.
(mods please move if this isnt appropriate please).
any help would be great.

Where do you want to raise the money from?
There are lots of grants that you can apply for if you are not for profit. Gaming grants are a big one - do you run a kindy program? There is currently a $10 000 grant available for NFP centres running a kindy program.
we were thinking of creating a cook book of recipies popular in our centre. the money would go back to the centre for new resources. and ausgirl we are already onto that one!
AFAIK, fundraising is fine so long as you're putting the funds back into the organisation - aka not making a profit as a business venture. A lot of sporting and community clubs fund raise for equipment etc
We are a community coop so a not for profit cc centre and we fundraiser constantly. We have pasta drives, wine drives, hot cross bun and pie drives, trivia nights, auction nights, art exhibitions..... And so on.
As long as the money is recorded in the p&l sheets through finance as fundraising donations and allocated to specific purchase or activities then I don't think there would be any issues.
I am on the fundraising committee for my DD kinder, not for profit. We did a trivia night and included a silent auction and made over $7k. We got alot of things donated, for example all the prizes and silent auction items were donated (we had prizes such as a night away, mens bike, signed AFL jumpers) and the people hosting the trivia night donated their time. We only had to pay for decorations and the hire of the hall. It was alot of work but worth it in the end. We had 160 people attend at $15 per person. Some of the silent auction items had a minimum start bid. We also had raffle prizes and you had to buy a minimum of $10.
Other ideas we do are chocolate drive, jump-a-thon, we make a little money off uniform (non-compulsory), Easter Raffle, Xmas Raffle, Bunnings Sausage Sizzle (we made $1,800)
