Phenergan use on a 7mnth old

My daughter appears to have had a reaction to something over the weekend I have worked out it was either antibiotics or yoghurt. She had been covered in a raised itchy red rash for three days and nooooo sleeping for the whole house.
I went to the doctor who prescribed an anti histamine and itchy bath solution which he said would work if it was a reaction and to get the phenergen if it had not worked as then it would be viral and would ease her itching. I have used the anti histamine and bath stuff to no avil now wanting to try the phenergen but im hesitant as hes percribed 5mls 4 times a day for 4 days.
That seem excessive to me. I was thinking more 2.5mls just before bed so she can get some sleep.

Please don't use phenergen on a baby. Go and get a second opinion. It can be dangerous.

Im not sure about the dosage but I had a problem with my ds and I asked the chemist and they said there are better anithistamines out there then phenergan. I cant remember the one I got but I would defiantly say go to a good chemist and talk to them about what one to get. Obviously phenergan makes them very drousy.

I cant get into the doctors again until wed do you think just wait it out if its viral I guess it should go in the next day or two

5mls sounds like a lot of phenergan for a 7 month old. If you can't see a dr you should at least discuss the dosage with a chemist before giving any to her. Also, see if you can get in to see a different dr for a 2nd opinion.

I agree. 7 months is very young for that. Ive just had the itchiest rash EVER that the dr thought was viral and he prescribed me a steroid cream and only suggested an over the counter pill (clarityne). Not suggesting that it's by any means the same or should be treated the same but I am sure there are creams that could be used first?

The chemist lady didn't let me take it home and suggested the bath stuff and antihistamine
I just am second guessing because it hasn't worked and im thinking I should have listened to the doc.
but I have some at home anyway as I use it for my 3 yr old for car sickness.

I would be extremely cautious giving phenergan to a child, particularly a child under 12 months. Phenergan has a side effect of sedation and can cause respiratory depression. As a nurse I am cautious giving phenergen to adults. Try speaking with a pharmacist and a second medical opinion might be a good idea. Hope she feels better soon.

I meant to say as well that at first the dr wasn't sure whether mine was viral or an allergic reaction but that for either of them I could expect up to 2-3 weeks of the rash (even if I did just come into contact with something once that I was allergic to).

Phenergan is something I would NEVER use on a baby that young! I even have hesitations using it on my older kids because I know how it can affect me. I think you will find that there are other options that will work just as well and be OK for a baby that young.

With DDI ; my Dr prescribed phenergn 5ml Bd ...the pharmacy advised strongly against it. They said that lots of doctors from overseas prescribed it because there's no restrictions over there so it tends to be prescribed Willy nilly.

That dose is massive for a baby... I definatly wouldn't give.

It goes off their weight not age. Id not give it to mine. Sorry that doesn't help at all does it :(

That is a large dose. I've knocked adults out with that (I'm a nurse too). Most drs are leaning towards Zyrtec for suspected allergies with kids these days.

If the dr is determined for you to give it (which I would never do), request a script.

I did get a script for it the pharmacy lady kept it once she convinced me to try antihistamine and the bath stuff:( Shes crying still wish i could help her. Maybe put bepanthanan all over her skin?

Can you call Nurse on call for some help/suggestions? Or your 24 hr maternal heath nurse?

I wouldn't use bepanthen it could make it worse. Try nurse on call. If its a viral illness causing the rash she may have a sore throat or other pain related to the illness making her upset too, have you considered baby panadol or nurofen?

Mummabee, do you have a chemist near you that would be open late? Zyrtec and claratyne are both over the counter meds so if you can find a chemist, you could get something for her. If you can't get to a chemist and they are really bothering her mix some bicarb soda and cold water to make a thick paste and them put it on the hives. Or if there are too many, give her a bath with bicarb added to it. Don't use the bepanthen or you will get it everywhere. I know it will be tempting to give it to her, but if you read on the bottle, it does say not to give it to children under 2 and most pharmacists will be very wary of giving it to older children and adults as well.
